#fotovorschlag Mein Meisterwerk" I don't know if it's a masterpiece, but I was proud of it anyway. It's a design for a front garden. The clients' wish was for their long, narrow front garden to become a real garden. Their back garden was very small and they loved gardening. They also wanted a place to sit in the sun, preferably with a bit of privacy. They wanted to be able to walk through the garden, but also for visitors to be able to easily find the door and walk to it. A lot of wishes, which I was able to fulfill. They were super happy with it. The first 2 photos were taken at the beginning of the 3rd year. The third photo is a plan. And on the 5th photo you can see the garden after construction, still without plants. I don't design anymore, only sometimes for family and friends, but I kept my old plans. This was a good opportunity to take another look at it.

A view of a front garden. There is a winding gravel path in the middle of the photo. Borders with low plants along the edge to the right and left, and higher ones behind them. The path leads to a narrow street with houses behind it.Another view of the front garden. Now from the street. In the foreground a gravel path with flagstones. Behind that from left to right a straight path of large gray concrete tiles. In the middle is a pergola with 4 poles that stand on either side of the tiled path. Around the paths green shrubs and plants. In the background even more green shrubs in the gardens of the neighbors.A map, made on the computer, but then colored by hand. Also details written by hand. In Dutch. In the middle of the photo a water element, surrounded by low plants, including Alchemilla mollis that blooms lushly green-yellow. Around it soil. On the left you see part of a bench (from which there is a nice view of the other gardens, but you can't see that in the photo). In the background a window of the house.

In an area infested with deer, it is so nice that they never touch irises or peonies which bloom at the same time each spring here in Georgia. Iris 'Daughter of Stars' is the only iris I've grown that reliably lives up to its "rebloomer" status. Pictured here with Peony 'Paula Faye'.

Close up of a dark purple iris blooming on a front walk. There are pink peonies in the background, and straps of iris foliage. The front walkway is in full bloom with dark purple irises. Behind them are pink peonies, and further back are George Taber azaleas. A green boxwood hedge frames the walkway garden. View of the boxwood hedge and the purple irises and pink peonies blooming behind the hedge. A house sits in the background and there are two large planters with lollipop boxwoods and other spring flowers blooming in them.

Without some thought & a plan, letting your lawn go will mean “weediness”* and ultimately scrubland.

This is fine, for scrubland & wild areas but in the built environment, a lack of design intention will aggravate neighbours & turn them against #WildlifeGardens & #NativePlants.

Luckily, I am a #Wildlife #FoodForest #GardenDesigner & it’s my job go think, plan & design 😎

*weediness means it looks a mess, it does *not* mean native plants or #WildFlowers.

Creating an ornamental property line screen for a client using both natives and non-natives with year-round foliage and flower interest. Evergreens, conifers, and deciduous materials are included.

A collage of plant materials featuring all the plants in the attached garden design plan. Foliage plants include Fothergilla, fountain grass, Japanese maple, golden conifers, and anise. Flowers include a yellow magnolia, dallies, orange tea olives, native hydrangea, abelia, butterfly bush. Many of these plants are attractive to pollinators.A hand-drawn garden design plan using both natives and non-natives to create an ornamental property line screen.

This is one of those years when I did a lot of the Lemonade & Grape Garden Theme. Those Woodstock Hyacinths are so dreamy - and fragrant. The bulbs are planted in October with the other plant materials... and then we wait for the spring show.

Planning for an upcoming project: these large, green steel planters will need to be completely emptied before I can refill them. No drainage holes were ever placed in them and you can only imagine what's happened here after a year.... whew! Stinky, standing water and dead plants in sludge. But no worries. I'm already working on replacement options.

One idea for the planters is to use standard form Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana' which require very little maintenance. It's a conifer that has been grafted onto a trunk, giving it a lollipop look in a planter. Fillers include Heuchera, vinca, and golden acorus grass. Another option is this narrow growing Thuja 'DeGroot's Spire' which also requires very little maintenance. The base of this planter is filled with apricot-colored impatiens. A drawing depicting two different options for two planters: on the left is the DeGroot's Spire, and on the right is a Chamaechparis obtusa, standard form. Two green planters and the matching front door at the entrance to the building. The planters are filled with dead plants, soon to be removed. A reflection of the blue sky can be seen in the windows above the front doors.

As #FoodForest #GardenDesigner, I advocate planting edible non-natives all the time, key point is *native plants where possible* ie in terms of biomass & diveristy eg windbreak hedges, ground cover.

Also, design in *habitat diversity* See John Little's amazing work youtube.com/watch?v=Z_AzlRC6TB

As a garden designer, my work often follows me into the kitchen where I obsessively put gardenscapes on just about anything: salads, pizzas, mac and cheese (pictured), soups (floating gardens), dinner rolls and focaccia. This happens more often during the holidays when I have time off. This is my therapy.

Before baking: a mac and cheese garden arranged on top, created with asparagus for flower stalks, mini bell peppers and tomatoes for flowers, red onion slivers for flowers, and little mushrooms and chives for grasses, dotted with toasted pine nuts for stones. A few olives and parsley leaves adorn the flower stems. The finished product: a baked mac and cheese with roasted vegetables, herbs, olives and nuts.

#OTD Edna Walling, #Australian #GardenDesigner & #Writer, is born.

Edna's #Naturalistic #Gardens never felt #Contrived or overly planned.

Edna #Randomly threw #Potatoes on the ground, & planted #Trees in those spots.

If potatoes landed almost on top of each other, Edna let the chips (or #PotatoChips 😂) fall where they may.

One of my favorite times of the year: Amaryllis season! I've got a bunch of them this year, including a couple of new ones. There's nothing better than having an indoor garden full of flowers in January and February.

The roots of an Amaryllis bulb. In just 6 weeks I'll have blooms.I've started adding moss and cones to my amaryllis pots. I use white plastic knives and write the name of the bulb on them to stick in the pots, so I can keep track of which bulbs are blooming. A collection of Amaryllis bulbs, ready to bring indoors for the season. More to follow!

I know this will likely get lost in the feed, but after planting hundreds of tulips the past couple of weeks, sometimes when I'm alone I go out to my garden and cover myself with dirt and leaves and pretend I'm a tulip.
