Hey mastodonians. So I’ve been referred to a #gastroenterologist specialist. They found a weird something on my latest #CTscan and want me to get some kind of scope camera surgery? They want to look at my asophogus, where it goes from my stomach into my asophogus. Acid reflux runs in my DNA, so that sucks. This will not occur in several months, but like, do they put you to sleep? My veins are shot three times over. How will they get an IV? Could/would they use the anesthesia mask on me for this? It’s supposed to be a day surgery and I’m a giant ball of anxious not knowing when they’re going to call me in and what they’re going to do. #medicalAdvice? #Gastro #procedure #help

If I asked you to name the most common causes of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI/PEI), what would you list?

And why?

Food for thought on what medical literature commonly - incorrectly - states as the most common cause of EPI: bit.ly/43E9wg5

Gif showing the relative sizes of populations of people with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and the % of those with EPI, contextualized against the prevalence of these in the general population and those with EPI. It's a small number of people because these conditions aren't common, therefore these conditions are not the most common cause of EPI!

What's up? I just got a call from my #gastroenterologist who told be that she talked about me during their last team staff.
She told me a name of a specialist for the wrong way.
And told me to call them back next week to have a #feeding tube.

Maybe I'll stop loosing weight? ;D

It’s been interesting talking to people w/exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI/PEI/PI) about what it takes to get updated pancreatic #enzyme replacement therapy (#PERT) prescriptions.

Surprising amount of variance among #healthcare providers, even with #guidelines.

Here’s a guide I wrote for other people with EPI - what would you add to it?

@Mrfunkedude #Today is a good day. My #PrimaryCarePhysician offered to go with me to the gastro who's doing my #biopsy. I told her I wasn't seeing him again; his nurse destroyed my trust. My PCP will definitely let him know what went down.
I will have the biopsy, have results sent to PCP and if needed, she'll refer me to a different #gastroenterologist.
It's a relief to have a PCP who cares about me, takes care of me, and goes above and beyond.
Such a relief.

@freemo someone who knows more about this than me #gastroenterologist, #immunologist, #microbiologist could tell you whether a 'sterile' human could survive or even exist. How was the bubble boy fed? Did he receive intravenous nutrition?

Healthy humans carry 1.5 kg of a diverse selection of bacteria in their intestines (the microbiota), which have an important role in maintaining health. A healthy diet maintains a healthy gut microbiome, and we are only just beginning to understand the importance of these bacteria.

It is not only the gut that carries a commensal bacterial load, any body cavity linked to the external environment will carry a non-pathogenic community of bacteria, including the uterus. This means, we are likely to be exposed to placental bacteria in the womb. Once exposed in the womb I don't know how a human would be subsequently 'sterilised' of bacteria.

I stand to be corrected by those with the knowledge!

Ok, it's been a week. I am Ira, a #gastroenterologist and #internist here in #NYC (so many hashtags!). I practice medicine, am a medical reviewer for Everyday Health and the host of The Internal Medicine Show on SiriusXM Doctor Radio. I like to follow other physicians, scientists, #dog lovers, some political stuff, and more. If you have any medical questions, you can always ask me and I may answer them on my show Mondays at 8AM ET! Oh, and #Brooks is the best!
