While my husband ‘s getting on with building a new walled pathway through the garden (see recent post) & in the process building up his muscle strength & #pecs (no #gym membership or #crossfit workouts for him!) our fruit trees are happily getting productive - sunshine, calm warmer air and lots of insects all good for this ‘James Grieve’ apple, my favourite, and beyond it on this espalier, a traditional Orange Pippin.

Doing what it does best, Erigeron, gracing our autumn garden wall. Old-fashioned name Fleabane goes back beyond 16th century English. Was it thought to deter fleas or flies? ‘Bane’ I think means scourge, something that causes pain or suffering. Why would a flower want to deter insects??
