This is probably my favorite Gene Vincent video clip, with his Clapper Boys (almost) stealing the show:

Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps: Baby Blue (1958, from the movie "Hot Rod Gang")

I've always liked the record, too, and it's one of the more often played 45s in my collection.

Gene Vincent visited Finland in 1964, being the first of the major 1950s rock'n'roll stars to do so. But even though he made a good impression on those who were lucky enough to see one of his two performances, I doubt that they were nowhere near as ecstatic as this one.

ā€œEwww, Dad. Rockabilly?ā€ asked my youngest who apparently liked the idea of walking back to Germany from London.

Hope you like to swim, Broseph.

But seriously, I’m a fan of rockabilly. Maybe not rockabilly this old, though I do appreciate the history and its significance to the musical development of acts that I REALLY enjoy, but it’s still a fun time.

Also, feel free to correct me, but isn’t Gene Vincent the first person outside of, say, the regretful minstrel shows and blackface eras of vaudeville and big band that wore what is basically a costume?

I mean, call suits and blazers what you want, but I don’t really count them as COSTUMES unless you’re talking about Patrick Bateman. But before Vincent, that was what everyone was wearing.

Even Link Wray - who famously looked like a badass - got his first hit AFTER Vincent.

Even ELVIS wore blazers and suits back then.

Am I wicked uninformed on my musical history here?

Anyway, yes. I like rockabilly. It’s always weird to think you could hear the… youth of music, but it’s undeniable. The music is faster than anything that came before. It oozed more energy. It worries more parents. It was aimed SQUARELY at kids.

It’s undeniable.

And the musicianship is so good. Guys that cut their teeth playing country and maybe sneaking off to the side to play ā€œblackā€ music (much to the chagrin of their families - just ask at Les Paul) melded supposedly separate genres and came up with something so delightfully American it’s a joy to listen to.

America may be a lot of really shitty things, but it has ALWAYS brought the heat when it came to music and this is no exception.

Rockabilly’s mix of fast-paced rhythm and blues and country tricks makes for a delightful listening experience and I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving it.

Der bereits 1971 mit 36 Jahren verstorbene Gene Vincent, als Rockabilly-Pionier mit "Be-Bop-A-Lula" bekannt gewordene Rock and Roll-SƤnger, brachte 1958 mit seinem 4. Album "A Gene Vincent Record Date With The Blue Caps" heraus.
"Git It" war mit der Neuinterpretation von George Gershwins "Summertime" von 1934 eine von zwei ausgekoppelten Singles.

This should be last one from me this evening, and it was a toss-up: Sly And The Family Stone, or Gene Vincent?

Ah-hah!

Gene Vincent, "You Can Make It If You Try" (1971)

If you've yet to make that discovery, keep going.

"You can make it if you try
Oh you can make it if you try
Oh sometimes you have to cry
Just a little while, try
But you can make it if you try …"

#GreatAlbums1950s - #GeneVincent & His Blue Caps – Bluejean Bop! (1956). Like many 50s rockers, Vincent’s LPs fall short of ā€œgreatā€ owing to labels’ habit of reserving the best tunes for singles (no ā€œBe-Bop-a-Lulaā€ here or on the 1957 followup). Still, this LP is a rare place to hear a full set by the original Blue Caps – including ace Cliff Gallup on lead guitar. Plus there’s plenty of hellfire in ā€œJezebelā€ and ā€œWho Slapped John?ā€ to show why Vincent is a #rockabilly legend.
