#Genealogist

Walking around a local grocery store in #NewOrleans & I came across a huge stack of Poor Boy (Po Boy) bread. I absolutely grabbed one (#bread is life).

I found the name of original bakery owner: George H Leidenheimer from Germany.

What's a #genealogist to do on a rainy day in #NOLA (besides drink 😉)? Create a #WikiTree profile.

And just my luck, I happen to know a German that can help, @Flominator, until I saw which part of #Germany George came from. Drats 🫤

@shamrockgenealogist @wikitree Thanks for posting about the #Auschwitz Initiative on #WikiTree. This message was a needed reminder for me to continue this important work on the transport list I started.

I will add that if any #genealogist (or anyone that does #genealogy ) is nervous to help this initiative, don't be. Many of us will help get you started using tools built by @Flominator

Anyone have experience with flatbed scanners? Looking for something above entry level, 11x17 capable, and has some speed to it. As a former high end drum scanner operator, I've been very spoiled in my lifetime. My little Epson v350 doesn’t cut it anymore. As the accidentally appointed family #genealogist, I am tasked routinely with scanning old photos and photo albums, some dating back to the late 1800s.

Looking for a faster better flatbed scanner.

I am an amateur #genealogist, and am often searching through #newspapers of the past two centuries.

At no point are these records unbiased, in my experience. The second lesson they teach is the purpose of #journalism in the recent centuries has always been selling readers to merchants/politicians.

There was no golden age.

But they are a record of a community, through the lens of a #bias.

When you're on Ancestry, do you ever:
* Swear that someone else *must* have changed your tree (even though you know that's not possible)?

* Think that people are missing from your tree or that they "somehow" got disconnected from other people in your tree?

* Accept Hints from other people's trees, or maybe you used to do so, early on?

There's a good chance you have duplicates in your tree, and you might not even realize it.

A lot of Genealogists have been having problems with a glitch in Ancestry, where it creates duplicates of people already in their trees. Here's how to fix the problem now, in the easiest way possible, and how to avoid it in the future.

Do NOT delete the duplicates! This can mess up relationships in your tree, and cause you to lose sources & hint matches. Instead, try this…

@rodhilton

The video they put up as an example of a "Gold Mining Town in California" is so full of historical inaccuracies because it's taken from "Wild West" films, NOT from historically accurate photos & drawings. One #Genealogist YouTube account analyzed it and showed the countless errors. He was confused about why it put 1900's windows on 1860's buildings (the actual era of the Gold Rush), why there were so many buildings, a lack of signs, etc.

It's because their #Sora example video was based on Hollywood's "Spaghetti Western" movies, not on historical images. If you take it as coming from those, then what you see makes perfect sense.

Some of the mistakes the Sora people left in were embarrassing and should have been edited out-- several chimneys on each roof, horses without riders, pedestrians without heads, a two-legged horse, etc... It's actually a lousy example if you want to impress users. It shows how truly awful #AI can be.

Who looks up their birth doctor and goes and pays their respect to him/her at their final resting place? A #Genealogist! In this case, Dr. Botte delivered both my sister (1968) and brother (1970) in San Diego. Link: findagrave.com/memorial/225976

🧵 2) On Mastodon, you can follow hashtags like #Genealogy, #Genealogist, #Geneadons, #FamilyTrees and other similar hashtags. Be sure to follow and post to the group account @geneadons with any genealogy-related posts.

3) One of the biggest things you need to do when #ScanningPhotos is to RENAME YOUR FILES, so people who look at your files later will know who is in the images. Always list females by maiden names, even if they were married at the time. Include as much info in the filename as you can (date, place, etc).

Do not use commas in the filenames, as this can cause some files to blow up on some computer systems.

For names and file management, here is Part Two of my "Avoiding Common Mistakes" blog for #Genealogists.

If you don't have anyone who wants your family photos, write (gently, with special photo-writing pen, so as not to damage the photos) the names of the people in the photos on the back of them. Either hand them yourself to a local LDS #Genealogy Library or put in your Will that you want them digitized and posted to a Genealogy website. You undoubtedly have cousins who would LOVE to see them, especially if they are of Grandparents or further back. The LDS Library will post them to #FamilySearch for you, so other family can find them.

You don't have to be Mormon to use this library. Just make sure the photos have been identified as much as possible. If you don't know the names for some of them, note their possible family line and a #Genealogist can probably figure out who they are.

My mother and I have saved photos for friends who had no heirs, and matched them to some VERY grateful family members. Don't let your #FamilyPhotos die with you.

Can anyone help date this photo? Perhaps a #historian or #genealogist with an eye of fashion and garments.

Not my photo, but copied with permission of the owner from another social media service, to help him understand who this may be in his family. UK, South England possibly

I went with my husband today (without the kids) and took pictures of #headstones at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. And then later in the afternoon, I went to #BYU and scanned some documents that my great grandmother put together. I’m exhausted from everything, but I feel like a #genealogist today!

So my husbands grandmother took her #ancestrydna test..and I’m pretty positive that her father is not the father she thought she had, but actually an Italian bartender who owned the tavern where the grandmother and grandfather lived in an apartment above. This is blowing my mind. But what do I do with this info? Do I reach out to the family? Do I tell? Or just let it go? He never had any children by the way (her biological father) #Genealogist #Genealogy #Geneadons

A lot of the problems I've seen #Genealogists having over the years (on social media and elsewhere) seem to come down to a few common problems. Many of the #BrickWalls we all tend to hit could be solved by addressing just one or two of these points.

Both beginning and experienced researchers can hit some of these same problems.

Here are a few #TipsAndTricks for researching more effectively and for building an error-free #FamilyTree.
