#Genealogists

Good morning, Mastodon! Yesterday I finished cataloging the photos my great grandparents carefully annotated in this album from the late 1870s. What a great gift this is. So many faces of so many family members, some I didn't know of, others I did.

I'm ready to move on to digitizing and wonder if any of you clever #genealogists or #archive people have suggestions for #restoration of the leather cover? I'd appreciate brand names of products or #diy recipes.

#boost4reach much appreciated.

A very old leather-bound book slightly less than a hand-wide tall. The leather is embossed with a gold border and a bouquet of flowers in red, light blue and white. The shape of the bouquet forms a letter C tilted backwards to the left and is tied with a lavender bow. The leather is worn and dry, a small tear at the top of the spine is visible.

For those #Genealogists who are interested, this video shows you how to copy your 23&Me results to #GedMatch , after you DOWNLOAD them from #23andMe .

#GedMatch has a host of great tools that allow you to continue analyzing your DNA and build your #FamilyTree with #GeneticGenealogy .

Be aware that law enforcement can also use this particular database. However, you must OPT IN to allow your data to be accessible to them. So far, they have been using it to help identify unknown "Jane/John Doe" bodies and solve #ColdCase crimes.

Promotional graphics created by the Newspapers-dot-com company and originally posted on Facebook. Color scheme is generally brown and images are generally faded and vague, to emulate old newspapers in the background.

The main background image is from a newspaper about the sinking of the Titanic, and reads:
"TITANIC SINKING
Marine Disaster
NOT ENOUGH BOATS ON THE TITANIC TO RESCUE ALL
Heroes of Titanic"
Below this are four photos of people who were on board the ship.

Below that, the modern added text reads:
"Real people. Real stories. Real history... Free Access [asterisk] this weekend
Newspapers by ancestry"

Asterisk leads to this footbote text:
"[Asterisk] Free access ends 17 Feb 2025. Registration required. Terms apply."

Person deep in thought two minutes and one minute before midnight researching on their computer. When midnight strikes they put up some celebratory fireworks while still still researching and return to their computer.

iMeUsWe: Family Tree & Stories, a #genealogy social media platform for India, has received two major updates recently, including one that adds "communities" to allow you to collaborate with #genealogists outside of your family tree who share your interests.

For genealogists and historians, there are some updates to newspapers on Papers Past. A good update for Taranaki but the rest are pretty minor:

- Oamaru Mail (July-August 1916)
- Otago Daily Times (January-March 1886)
- Otago Witness (April 1909, December 1909)
- Taranaki Daily News (1936-1945)
- Timaru Herald (June 1913)

Clooz 4.4.1 is out, and for those #genealogists using Windows it's a very handy research utility, interacting with Ancestral Quest, Family Historian, Legacy Family Tree, and #rootsmagic It helps you manage your #genealogical documents/records, and points you towards other records.

For those #genealogists who use #FamilyHistorian for their #genealogy research, a handy little plugin for those times when you need to change a specific fact for a specific individual or family.

For those #genealogists use Google #Chrome during their #genealogy research and #Ancestry and to a lesser extent #MyHeritage and #familysearch there is an interesting browser extension to check out for those sites:

For those #genealogists using Family Historian 7 #genealogysoftware (or 5 or 6) and who want to backup their FH settings (not genealogy data but software settings/customizations) or move to a new machine, the "Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings via Windows" plugin just received a major upgrade.

For those #genealogists using WikiTree, the WikiTree Browser Extension has had several preview updates this month, with a couple of new features (Space Drafts and Image Table) for the #genealogy web browser extension :

For those #genealogists who have their own websites, you might want to look at "Hirtius a (online) Historical Research Assistant" (emphasis on the historical) - it's software with very basic genealogy functionality, combined with photo management and a wiki. It won't replace a full-featured online genealogy app, but it could be an interesting research/collaboration tool:

@genchat@lor.sh @genchat@a.gup.pe #genchat As someone who is still "the secret" to some in my family, I ask you to consider that the need that some feel for these secrets is rooted in shame & this kind of shame is quite unhealthy for everyone involved. Of course, I'm not proposing that no care should be taken or that anyone should be deliberately outed via a public family tree. But I do think that #genealogists should be concerned with truthfulness in their documentation & shouldn't perpetuate misinformation.

Here is an obituary for him. Obituaries often allow you to discover the names of living people associated with someone.

[For any #Genealogists researching him, he is on #FamilySearch with ID# G5NY-TCK .]

It is that kind of Wednesday with #genealogy

I know sand boxes are a way to parse out fact from fiction but I really dislike creating them. They are so time consuming trying to convince others why it was needed in the first place.

As a ProGen, it was extremely challenging convincing people that #DNA #ethnicity reporting can actually hinder research. But with very little paper trails, #family #folklore and #stories change from fiction to fact. Aaagh.

Color Photo
An old brown map is the base of the photo. The map appears to be of the Yellowstone area in the United States.

A white round saucer with pinkish red decorative flourish around the edge called transferware.

A coaster sits inside the saucer with this text:

Do something, lead, follow, or get out of the way. -Ted Turner

@develin @dangillmor

In order to find relationships and more accurately analyze ethnicity results, the old #DNA data must be kept for comparison. #Genealogists are perfectly able to delete their own test results (and those of relatives they manage) if they wish, but rarely do. Leaving the data in the database allows you to find new family matches and more refined ethnicity results as time goes on.

#Genealogy is not a finite study. It doesn't end. Their are always new discoveries to be made, and every answer creates more questions.

A Genealogist is NEVER "finished" with the DNA results.

🧵 2) On Mastodon, you can follow hashtags like #Genealogy, #Genealogist, #Geneadons, #FamilyTrees and other similar hashtags. Be sure to follow and post to the group account @geneadons with any genealogy-related posts.

3) One of the biggest things you need to do when #ScanningPhotos is to RENAME YOUR FILES, so people who look at your files later will know who is in the images. Always list females by maiden names, even if they were married at the time. Include as much info in the filename as you can (date, place, etc).

Do not use commas in the filenames, as this can cause some files to blow up on some computer systems.

For names and file management, here is Part Two of my "Avoiding Common Mistakes" blog for #Genealogists.
