They are #Greenwood by #MichaelChristie, and #StationEleven by #EmilyStJohnMandel. #MexicanGothic by #SilviaMorenoGarcia is a #Gothic #Horror novel. #GothicHorror.
#CanadianFiction has come a long way from the White Anglophone #NationalAngst and grim self-introspection #Realism that once haunted our #culturalPsyche.

@danacorn The ironies of the #HarryPotter series are noticeable, and many. One of the biggest is that the coming together of Wizards, including half-bloods, and magical creatures against #Voldemort and his crew represents diversity versus intolerance.
Voldemort is a classic cult-leader/ #Hitler trope.
*** J. K. Rowling seems oblivious of her own lessons.
On the plus side, the series generated a not just a huge following, but it became a gateway drug for #reading & #books. Especially for boys, which in many ways the print world gave up on.
It also was very effective in getting not just #ReluctantReaders into the world of #fiction / #literature, but also those with reading process differences.
The series really helped my son overcome his challenges in learning to read. I also saw this in my experience as a teacher-librarian.
It is unfortunate, that like other past works of #genre #literature, and #ChildrensLiterature, the creator's personal flaws & societal views stain the creativity & positive qualities of the work.
#GenreLiterature #GenreFiction
***Ursula K. le Guin was not wrong in her assessment of the #book & Rowling's #writingstyle.

Mad Hatters and March Hares
edited by #EllenDatlow
#TorBooks 2017

Took me quite awhile to complete this book, which says more about me than the book. There was a time when I could inhale a book, but now I tend to nibble-sniff at the pages. One of the reasons I decided to try the #PicturePromptBingo card, was because it was a prompt not a challenge, and it was very open to interpretation of choices.

This #Anthology provides an excellent assortment of tales that take inspiration from both of the Alice novels. There is a great range of creativity in both the use of Carroll's characters and settings. What I found missing, or at least limited, was the frivolity and whimsy that fills Carroll's creation.

The cover of the book features the following headline: β€œAll-New Stories from the World of #LewisCarroll's #AliceInWonderland.” These #stories and #poetry, for the most part, look at Wonderland through the lens of the β€œreal” world. As consequence, the reader will find serious #Fantasy tales, some of which are coloured with #Horror. The charm of #Wonderland's topsy-turvy logic has become darker, and the delightfully #Weird has become #Nightmarish.

A couple of the stories take place in a real world setting, and use references to Alice and Wonderland to express the #Protagonist's predicament and #Conflict.

Is this anthology a worthwhile read? The potential reader will find well written creative and thoughtful explorations of Wonderland and its inhabitants. They will be presented with protagonists facing problems of a fantastical and uncanny nature. But, if the reader is anticipating delightfully absurd tales full of whimsical humour, they will find the pickings rather thin.

Cover of anthology - Mad Hatters and March Hares, edited by Ellen Datlow. All new Stories from the World of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland by Jeffrey Ford, Seanan McMcGuire, Catherynne M. Valente, Genevieve Valentine, Jane Yolen - And Many More!
The cover includes an illustration of a creepy, doll-like figure of a man holding a top hat from which rises green smoke playing cards and a Hare wearing a vest. The Mad Hatter Magician's appearance is uncanny and sinister. The top hat green vapours suggest a witch's cauldron.

Now HERE'S a question for you: "Do you think eras should be considered genres, or would you separate the two?"
