How cool is that? A German silent drama filmed in 1929, which used amateur actors portraying their own lives. Billy Wilder worked on the screenplay. You can watch it in full here (with English and German subtitles).
Never knew this existed! Will be interesting to see Berlin in the late 20s...

PORT OF FREEDOM (’44): I hope you like accordions! Hans Albers busts out some serious tunes in this propaganda-free #wwii #germanfilm as he entertains at local red-light district nightclub, when not pining for the sea or falling for his late brother’s ex. Ilse Werner perfect as the country girl ex. She gets some radiant, beautiful close-ups in back half as romantic tension crescendos. Agfacolor visually pleasing. Had some poetic realism vibes at times- though we get happy endings all around.
I recently watched the film adaptation of Krabat by Otfried Preußler, which is a great autumn read in my opinion. Watching the film made me realise that pretty mutch all fantasy films or series that I watch are in English. I really need to find more non-English fantasy films!

“Even artistic geniuses or supposed artistic geniuses are not above the law”:
Reports of intimidation and verbal aggression, centering around the bad behavior of star actor and director Til Schweiger, have initiated a cultural reckoning in the German film industry.

I watched Daniel Brühl's 2022 film #Nebanan yesterday and loved it.
The subtle language (e.g. Daniel's switching between British and US accents), filmic (e.g. US franchise films, the controversies around Das Leben der Anderen) and political (e.g. the word play on Kohl) references, and mise-en-scène (e.g. Daniel's apartment) are wonderful and very cleverly done.
