Everyone knows I'm 69. I'm Native. I respect elders a great deal. Our wisdom can be unsurpassed and of great value. But we need people in the prime of their life on the front-lines. It is critical for the future.

Age and generation in the 119th Congress: Somewhat younger, with fewer Boomers and more Gen Xers

Overall, the median age of House Democrats is 57.6, while the median age of House Republicans is 57.5.

In the Senate, the median age of all Democrats is 66.0, a bit higher than the median for Republicans (64.5).

In the last 2 ½ years, eight members of Congress have died in office. All eight of them have been Democrats.

Democratic leaders need to start holding themselves accountable – by retiring when their time has come and making space for a new generation that can put fresh energy behind the party’s brand. When more than half of House Democrats over 75 say they're running for reelection, it’s clear that the message isn’t getting through.

"It shouldn’t be taboo for a political party to be honest about something like a 75-year-old man being diagnosed with cancer. The goal of a political party is not to establish and protect a gerontocracy but to serve its members and the country more broadly. Yet the Democrats are notoriously averse to having honest debates about their leadership. There’s a reason the past 8 Members of Congress who died while in office were all Democrats.

David Hogg, the gun control activist who was elected a senior official in the national Democratic Party, has been engulfed in controversy since he dared to suggest that incumbent Democrats should face competitive primaries. But that shouldn’t be any surprise; the party is fearful of competition. Incumbents tend to just ignore primary challengers unless they seriously think they have a chance of losing. Joe Biden never debated Minnesota Democratic Congressman Dean Phillipps, but if he had maybe we would’ve all seen his condition far earlier than we did. Given Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman’s deteriorating state, a competitive primary might be the only way to avoid a redux of Biden’s path ahead of the 2028 Senate campaign.

To really prove that they have learned from their Joe Biden mistake, the Democratic Party needs to be more, well, democratic."

@coleens_ lets just say the #MontrealProtocol was successful because the #decisionmakers of it's time would've felt the alternative within very few years and in their #lifetime.

The weird dichotomy of Joe Biden is that he was excellent at governing the nation while simultaneously being absolutely horrible at leading the nation.

I'm not sure anybody understands that, and it's a huge problem.

This failure wondering how his legacy will pan out.....it's panning out right now and it ain't pretty.

Not that it will stop anyone else making the same mistakes, look at Keir Starmer for example, every mistake the Dems made last election, he intends to copy himself. Keir is either thick as shit or a fascist ("why not both?")

"Hey, I'm a White Guy, I'm perfect, nobody should stop me!"

This is Yet Another STRONG argument against #gerontocracy

#democrats are pushing away younger reps, and WE are suffering for it.

The shambling mummies who might need life support to even stand and talk keep remaining in power.

They are often spineless, compliant to whatever repugnants push, and value more their DECADES long sponsor donors than their constituency.

We NEED younger, fierce, progressive, uncompromising leadership and ranks, else the dem party is just a rubber stamp to the GOP

Can we at least learn from this and the fall of the #sovietunion that a #gerontocracy that doesn't represent its people or stay up on new tech will always fall? We need the same percentage of #elderly people as make up the population. When that gets lopsided the nation is caught with its pant down easily.

Interesting analysis of the age difference between the leaders and the population…
Again, the USA is the outlier with very old politicians, which is not that surprising when you realise that dictators tend to be old.

@faraiwe Not what we're talking about here. YOU said "the #gerontocracy of the #dmeocraticparty needs gone.."

That is diff than saying someone barred the young from leadership.

Yours was a blanket statement about older Dems (which you spelled wrong.. might want to change that)

So we're discussing 2 different things here.

1: Nobody should be barred from leadership for age. That's not why the olds are barring them. They hate Progressives, not youth.

2: Age shouldn't be a factor for anything

2025-02-22

@GottaLaff the #gerontocracy of the #dmeocraticparty needs gone..

We don't want "strong worded letters" or legislation to address this", anymore. It never worked. WII we sent hundreds of thousands of ARMED people to take out nazis, not "strong worded letters".

We have a full #nazi #coup taking place and those old, useless, doddering imbeciles keep babbling about how to please their billionaire donors.

YOUNG, PROGRESSIVE, UNCOMPROMISING, BOLD, FIERCE leadership.

NOW.
