Five years ago, I won a trip to Southern Africa. Here I am in Botswana standing beside a magnificent baobab tree. These beauties are ancient and enormous, and I miss them. I enjoyed spending time with them, and likely will never see another again. #baobab #trees #GiantTrees #Botswana
This photograph — of uncertain attribution — purportedly shows a #NorthernCatalpa #Catalpa_speciosa of ludicrous proportions from Maysville, Missouri. As surreal as this size looks, it is consistent with the MO Department of Conservation website: a trunk circumference of 286”, roughly a diameter of 7’7” or 2.31 meters. Amazingly, another in Missouri has an even larger trunk!

We drove wayyy up the White River valley to find giants. This is one of the largest, if not the largest Western Red Cedars that I’ve seen in real life. My friend David found it wayyyy off the trails in White River Provincial Park.

To give a better idea of the scale of a giant #YellowBuckeye #Aesculus_flava this is a shorter specimen (134’ / 40.8 m) with a larger diameter (6’ / 1.83 m vs. 4.6’ / 1.4 m). Pretty unbelievable these #GiantTrees can occur in the Eastern US.
