Signed i think HARLEY, prolly John J. Harley, about whom i know very little. The engraver made the lines for the sky a bit wonky, and it was hard to avoid interference fringes on downsizing.

This engraving fills most of a page with a scene of a ruined stone archway with towers on either side leading perhaps to the courtyard of an overgrown medieval castle, perched on the side of a hill. A shepherd guides sheep down the path through the arch towards us. In the background another shepherd with more sheep, and, further, perhaps haystacks. the blank space here contained a poem in German.

Danaë, mother of Perseus. One can almost imagine the sky-god Zeus watching her dance here.

It was a little startling to open this huge book (some 400mm/16 inches tall) and see this full-page painting reproduced: you can almost feel the brush strokes.

It’s always tempting to increase chorma/saturation & make a more modern-feeling picture!

At any rate he seems to be a very ugly boy, but maybe it’s the hair giving him a skinhead look.

Here we see justice as represented in classical art - the blindfold of impartiality (hah) started appearing in the 15th or 16th century.

I have no idea about steaming hearts (?) in her hands, nor about the women on either side, nor what the right-hand person is standing upon. Nor the bird on her helmet actually. Clearly i am no art historian!

Any ideas?

The woman representing Justice here is blindfolded (as usual in art) representing impartiality. She rides a lion to symbolise power and authority. She holds a steaming heart in each of her outstretched hands, and her breasts are bare. She wears a helmet with a bird on top, wings outstretched. There is a long-haired naked woman to one side of her, and a clad woman standing on something at the right. Her name, Justitia, appears at the top of the picture. We see her bare feet on either side of the lion, showing that she is riding its back. Black line drawing on yellow background.

A knight, on foot, fighting a dragon. The image was captioned Putrefactio, or, rot, and seems to be an allegory of the knight fighting rot. It could be an early ad for bleach, but no, it’s more likely the inner journey of purification we must go through, in this occult book on the Philosopher’s Stone.

It could almost be Neuschwanstein castle, and i think it very likely that was the intent.

The artist, Ernst Neumann-Neander, of Munich, also designed motorbikes.

A locket, a vignette, a medallion, a small almost heart-shaped shape with a drawing of a round castle turret, or perhaps a bell tower judging by the louvres in the window, and a square keep, with a round turret at the nearest corner, and walls overgrown wit creeper or perhaps trees. I don’t know a lot about the artist here, Eugen Ludwig Hoess (1855 – 1955), beyond what i put in the notes; copyright ended on his work this January. He was best known for his work in Jugend magazine, including this one, and his theme of people living in nature.

Jugend was the Ray Gun Magazine of the 1900s.

Children with an adult, perhaps their mother, carrying small baskets and filling them with strawberries they are picking in the woods. Actually they look more like flowers than berries to me, and the wild strawberries i have seen are much smaller. In this colour painting from around 1903 we see the children wearing aprons, the tree trunks, and beyond, open countryside, probably farmland, a tower, a distant church spire and perhaps a small village, and, further some hills.

Here we see two people, one with an arm raised, running across an empty courtyard: empty except for a black dog or cat running in the other direction. A greenish yellow tint to this monochrome picture, which features a naked young man or boy, Cupid, standing with one bare foot on a flat stone, part of the ground, and another on the leg of a lady wearing a thin dress. Complete with naked Roman soldiers.

The tip of the arrow is glowing red hot in the original painting.

The book implies Poynter failed to capture movement in this piece, by focusing too much on detail. Not sure i entirely agree, what do you think?

Roman soldiers, some fully clothed and some entirely naked, some shirtless, are using ther strength to turn a windlass prepare a giant catapult to fire a huge arrow (I think), with the bare-legged and barefoot man atop the steps perhaps doing the aiming. In the painting, the end of the arrow is red hot, and the man is also shirtless. Archers return fire. One soldiier sees an arrow that narrowly missed him and landed in an upright beam. The slaves mentioned in the account below are i think dimly visible at upper right in the engraving, but i don’t really see them in the painting either. The catapult bears the inscription Delenda est Carthago, which is, Carthage must be destroyed, or, blotted out.

Picture by Tom Graham (1840-1906) engraved by the Dalziels in Good Words, for a poem “Reconciled” by English poet Jean Ingelow.

The reconciliation is between—well, that would spoil the surprise, but you can go read the poem, it won’t fit here.

Thomas was known for his careful attention to light and detail and it shows.

John, later Sir John Tenniel was a cartoonist for Punch, best known now for Alice in Wonderland drawings, also engraved by Dalziel Ltd.

This illustration by John Tenniel, engraved at the studio of the Dalziel brothers, shows the Margrethe Dagmar and the groom, King Waldemar Seier (the Victorious), of Denmark, in the year 1206 C.E. Note: they are also called in English Queen Margaret and King Valdemar II. In the background, Danish ships for going a-viking, and soldiers, warriers, with their spears for poking and hurling. The king has a little crown on top of his helmet, a robe, an elephant pendant, leather scale mail, and undershirt with a fetching border and that reveals his bare manly knees, intricate leggings and close-fitting soft boots. The queen also has a crown, long hair reaching own her back over her floor-length gown with its intricately-woven border, and a long dress beneath. There are bridesmaids in attendance behind her with flowers in their hair. They are on the beach, and a suicidal starfish looks on in the foreground.

This picture, by Thomas Morten, was engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. It shows a woman and two children sitting near a lit fireplace, their heavy clothing suggesting the house is not warm. One child holds a sprig of holly, but there do not seem to be presents or a tree. In the background, the giant tongs or andirons go with the hook dangling from the mantelpiece, for roasting meat. Wealthier families would have a clockwork “turnjack” rather than have a turnspit-boy stand by the fire and turn the meat every few minutes, needed to get an even roast. The clockwork roasting spit was one of the inventions that made the industrial revolution possible, by freeing up children’s time for going to school and learning.

A bookplate is a pre-printed label people would stick inside their books so when people borrowed them, they knew where to return them. “Ex libris” is also used for a bookplate, being Latin for from the library of.

This Jugendstile (Art Nouveau) one was made by Otolia Kraszewska, a Polish artist.

This black and white engraved bookplate shows a seated princess, her posture very regal, holding a bowl from which another woman is drinking. The words EX LIBRIS appear on an arch behind them. giant irises bloom suggestively, and some letters are partly visible, perhaps from the Latin Veritas (truth) or more likely Vernal meaning of Spring.

The Effect of the League - 2nd of 3 images (3rd to follow), from 1594.

The league here is probably the Ligue Catholique or Sante Ligue, and relates to opposition to king Henri IV of France, who was Protestant.

Cleaned up with GIMP including the G'MIC despeckle filter for the lower right quadrant.

In the background of this sketch-like drawing, a castle is being blown up by canons. But we hardly notice, because in the foreground is a three-headed monster, a dragon, wearing a robe with rosary beads and crosses on it, marching over naked people, with the symbols of world domination before it.

This #chromolithography example shows the inside of the chapel St. John’s College Cambridge. This picture was made around 1840; later, in 1860, the chapel was demolished & replaced with a Victorian Gothic Revival thing by Sir Gilbert Scott.

At least six colours here i think, so 6 plates, although sometimes they overprinted to get mixed colours.

The chapel was quite large, with a huge stained glass East window over the altar, a heavy ceiling with prominent wooden beams, but almost flat, and benches down the middle. This is a colour lithograph from 1840, 20 years before it was demolished.
