Another cianotype print. I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it.
For this one I used one of the alternate cover illus I did for Giètz.

Me and Elizabeth spent quite some time re-doing a bunch of panels for the new version of Giètz. Here's a few examples of the changes one can find in the new edition.

One panel from Giètz! in the old (2010) and the new (2025) version.
In this panel Nico, seen from behing, is confronted by two street thugs who want his money. In the newer version I have added a smoking cigarette in Nico's mouth (which I had originally forgotten to draw) and redrawn the face of the main thug, to have a less cartoony face. One panel from Giètz! in the old (2010) and the new (2025) version.
We see a young Nico playing the trumpet in a bomb shelter. Next to him the maestro of the local band, and his future girlfriend Maria. In the background assorted mix of frightened people who look at him while he plays.
In the new version we have redrawn all the faces, the ones in the background were too cartoony, Maria's face looked like she had seen a ghost and her eyes were too big. The maestro's face was monstrously huge. We chose to draw him looking down in the new version, which puts more focus on Maria, who is the important character in this panel. One panel from Giètz! in the old (2010) and the new (2025) version.
Here we see the owner of the club where Nico plays, who talks to the barman (out of shot). In the background Nico and band on stage playing. The pose of the character was completely unnatural, so I re-did him from scratch and also adjusted the face.

Time for another Giètz! thing. While fixing things and redrawing various aspects of the graphic novel I kept asking myself: "how would I draw this now?". Which led me to the idea of trying various styles on the same panels. A little "exercises in style" if you will. Some of them turned out interesting. I'm going to publish these over the corse of the coming weeks.

A four-panel comic, a reinterpretation of the next image, which is taken from Giètz!.
Panel 1: Nico, the protagonist walks towards the viewer, he is looking down, hands in his pockets, shoulders slightly raised.
Panel 2: Maria, long black curly hair, partially covered by a red foulard, also his girlfriend (but it's complicated) looks at him with an angry face, her arms crossed.
Panel 3: Nico excuses himself, his arms are spread out.
Panel 4: Maria's face (close up), she is still angry, but is also smiling a bit. She's forgiven him.A four-panel comic, the original panels from Giètz!.

Back in 2010 I had made a few parodistical cover variations for Giètz!, this is probably the one I like best! This is a detail from the updated version contained in the new edition.

An imaginary cover for an imaginary version of Giètz! (detail). The image is filled by a close up of the main character while blowing the trumpet. He is a zombie, with parts of his face missing, teeth exposed and one eye bulb almost falling out of its orbit.

I think the parts I like best from #giètz! are the locations and the depictions of post-war Italy that I created throughout the story. Here's some outtakes from the graphic novel.

3 B&W panels from a comic page.

panel 1: long shot of an italian town on the sea side. not swimming season yet so nobody is on the shore.

Panel 2: an old Italian car (Topolino) packed full with stuff is driving through a narrow town road

Panel3: the car stops in front of a cafè. The sign over the entrance says: Caffè Dettori2 B&W panels from a comic page.

Panel 1: a narrow road on the seaside cliffs, a bus.

Panel 2: The bus stops in the city centre. Some people are waiting on the sidewalk3 B&W panels from a comic page.

Panel 1: a luxurious car from the 1950 starts. A group of people on the far end of the panel are looking at it.

Panel 2: the car drives by a small coast town on top of a hill.

Panel 3: the car arrives at a luxurious villa. It's about to drive past the entrance gate, which is open. It's getting night.A single B&W panel, a woman is riding a bicicle on the badly illuminated street, past a large-ish historic apartment building.

Piero Umiliani, who is one of the characters of the – otherwise mostly fictional – graphic novel Giètz! was big into synths. He owned for example a EMS VCS-3 and made a few electronic soundtracks (here's an example: pieroumiliani.bandcamp.com/alb).
Couldn't help but make this little self-parody of the comic, with a slighly anachronistic twist.

A four panel comic in b&w.

Panel 1: Piero Umiliani sits with Nico, the main character in a slylish and luxurious living room. They are small talking about jazz.
Umiliani: I've heard many good things about you, you should come and see me in Milan!
Nico: Milan… that woudl be amazing!

Panel 2: Close up of Umiliani
Umiliani: Have you ever seen a modular synthesizer?

Panel 3: Umiliani moves to a medium-size eurorack synthesizer sitting on a shelf.
Umiliani: This is my new eurorack system. Listen to the pulsar module going into the modal resonator!

Panel 4: medium shot of Nico, his face is shocked, eyes and mouth are wide open. Cats shooting lasers from their eyes appear behind him.

A couple of pages I am quite happy with from new edition of #Giètz! by me and Andrea Campanella

#GraphicNovel #Comics #Comics #Fumetti #Jazz #jazzhistory #ItalianJazz #Music #tunué

Detail from a b&w splash comic page representing a dream sequence. Various characters are loosely arranged. In the top right corner the protagonist, dressed in a black suit, is blowing the trumpet. The sound emerges from the trumpet as a stream with a pentragram and notes in it. A woman first, and the protagonist together with the woman are sliding down this stream.
In the lower corner we see a small panel with the protagnist, who has just woken up, rubbing his eyes.A four-panel extract from the comic showing the protagonist getting into a fight with two thugs. He first gets punched in the face, then when he's down on his knees the other thug kicks him in the belly.

15 years ago I did the artwork for this graphic novel, written by the Italian writer and jazz lover Andrea Campanella. It was a decent success and I even won an award for it.

A lot has happened since then, and I also grew a lot as an artist in the meantime. If I was to go back I'd definitely take different decisions, but that was 2010.

Next week, this book will come out as a revised, updated and hopefully improved version in Italy (published again by Tunué).

Cover for the book Giètz!. The illustration that covers all of the book is rendered in white, yellow and dark brown and features a close up of the Italian trumpet player who is the main character in the book. He is looking downwards while blowing the trumpet. Behind him the sea and the silhouette of vegetation.
