Òran Mór in the West End of Glasgow at 4:11pm on the last Sunday afternoon in November. This former church was designed by J.J. Stevenson in an Italianate Gothic style and was built in the 1860s. It's now a popular arts venue and bar.

I'll be at the Byres Road Market in Hillhead Library again this Saturday from 11am until 4pm, with my Glasgow-themed books, prints, calendars, and the last four sets of these rather beautiful tenement tile ceramic coasters, which are the perfect present for the tenement fan in your life.

I've temporary removed them from my online store so I don't run out of stock before saturday, but if I have any left I'll put them back up again afterwards.

Mary Barbour and Isabella Elder mural by Protests and Suffragettes in the Govan area of Glasgow. The quote at the top is as relevant today as it was over a century ago when these two women, each in their own way, were striving to improve the lives of those around them.

The former Whiteinch Public School in Glasgow. Built in 1915, in the bottom right of this photo, you can see the fence which divided what was once the girls half of the school (in the forefround) from the boys half (in the distance). This segregation included separate entrances, playgrounds, classes and subjects, and was a requirement of the funding of public schools under the Education Act of 1872.

#London Liverpool Street has been confirmed as Great Britain’s busiest #railway station for a third consecutive year, recording 98 million entries and exits in 2024–25, according to the Office of Rail and Road. Six of the ten most-used flows were on the line, led by 8.7 million journeys between Liverpool Street and Tottenham Court Road. Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire was again the least used station, with 68 entries and exits. Outside London, #Birmingham New Street remained the busiest (36.6m), ahead of Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds. #Glasgow Central and #Edinburgh Waverley topped usage in #Scotland, while #Cardiff Central led in #Wales.

Looking up a stairwell in the former Old Cowcaddens Church in Glasgow. Designed by Campbell Douglas and Sellars, it was built in 1872. A stained glass window by John Clark was added below the original glass cupola above these stairs when it was converted into the National Piping Centre by McGurn, Logan, Duncan and Opfer in the 1990s.

Instead, they are likely present simply to maintain the symmetry of the building, and either hide internal features, such as chimney flues, or were used to save the cost of adding real windows, as glass would still have been quite costly at the time it was built.

The Georgian neo-Classical Aikenhead House in King's Park in Glasgow. If you look carefully at the windows at the left hand end, you'll see they're actually fake, with the mullions and transoms painted on stone.

This wing was added in 1823, some 75 years after the introduction of a window tax in Scotland, so it's unlikely they were originally designed as functional windows that were then sealed up.

The Tudor Gothic Craigend Stables at Mugdock Country Park on the outskirts of Glasgow. Probably designed by Alexander Ramsey, they were built in 1812 to serve the nearby Craigend Castle, a Georgian mansion built around the same time that now lies in ruins. After laying derelict for many years, they have been restored and are now home to a visitors centre and cafe.
