Open Street Map Goals for 2025

A few years ago I started working to make my town, Glenrothes, more visible on the Open Street Map. Mostly it was just roads and land use imported from public data, though a few people had added in some housing areas, addresses, and point of interest. I have steadily been adding all the missing buildings, shops, addresses, other missing POIs and cleaning up major land use blocks.

It is far from perfect, but things are in a much better state than they were a few years ago. But there are still a few areas where data needs to be added. If possible, it would be nice to address these in the coming year:

  • Finish adding the remaining missing addresses – There are a lot of neighbourhoods still missing address data. The UK’s PAF still hasn’t been released under open license, so these will need to be surveyed and added manually. In clockwise order: Collydean, Pitcairn, Balfarg, Cadham, Markinch, Thornton, Stenton, Caskieberran, Stenton, and Leslie. I want to be accurate though, and the layouts of houses in same areas can be difficult to navigate, so it may take some time.
  • More details for POIs like shop opening hours – Locations on the OSM can have additional metadata like contact details, opening hours, whether they are disabled accessible, and things like types of menu for restaurants. Some of this info is made available on websites, some of it may need direct surveying.
  • There are lots of construction areas around town that will need to be surveyed when they are complete. New buildings and POIs to be added. The town park is also being upgraded and when it is finished next year there may be lots of changes to update, like new paths and play areas. Some of these changes have already been updated.

It would also be nice to try and convince more people I know to start using OSM data through something like the Organic Maps app. Unfortunately, this can be a difficult ask, particularly if data density can differ wildly from town to town. One particular point of contention is open maps often lack data like live traffic updates, and drivers often want this from their apps. I can’t disagree, as it is really useful info if you’re going out on a trip.

I mostly use StreetComplete for surveying, and that has had quite a few updates this year, making it ever easier to use. This year I discovered the Rapid editor which is really useful for adding data to unmapped areas in other parts of Scotland.

I hope all the OSM mappers had a good 2024, and wishing you a good 2025, too!

My daughter and I did some urban archaeology in #Glenrothes today. This used to be a house and sawmill. I used to come here when I was at school and pick up sacks of sawdust and wood shavings for the animal cages. Last time I was here, five years or so ago, it was fenced off and protected by security cameras. Now it’s just open and anyone can walk in there.

We had a cozy little gathering with just a handful of friends Saturday, with no theme other than to try some 'good stuff'. We whetted our appetites with a couple of small sample sets my wife gave me shortly after we met. 12 samples in total, just enough for small tasting pours.

Friends brought Mehkong cane spirit from Thailand. My neighbors brought a 23 year Glen Rothes 1997 Cask Strength and a nice beer from Amory’s Tomb Brewing Co., which we used as a palate cleanser part way through the evening.

I just kept pulling things, and in the end we went through 20 of my bottles over the course of the evening. It was an amazing night, so many good bottles.

Not in the order we did them, in part because I didn't record the specific order and in part because I can't be arsed to try to remember:
Wild Turkey Master's Keep Triumph
High West Bottled In Bond rye & Cask Collection bourbon finished in Barbados rum barrels
Glenmorangie 1987 Margaux Cask Finish, Distillery Manager's Choice bottled 2001, Cote De Nuits Wood Finish, 30 year Oloroso Cask Finish, Tain L'Hermitage 1975, Tain L'Hermitage 1978, Year of the Rabbit 23 year old, Grand Vintage Malt 1991, and Carn Mor "Celebration of the Cask" Westport (Glenmo in disguise)
Amrut Greedy Angels 12 year, Spectrum 004, and Single Cask Single Grain
Clan Denny 1991 Cameronbridge 29 year & 1978 Port Dundas 33 year single grains
Copper & Cask "Roxie" rye & "French Kiss" bourbon from Julio's Liquors
And, last but not least, Compass Box Great King Street Experimental Batch 00-V4

There may have been a couple of other random silly things at the end... 😉

post war was notoriously short sighted & car focussed. was a built in with a line running through the middle. It had direct links to Kirkcaldy & Edinburgh but they never built a.station on it & removed the line 10 yrs later under . Ultimately they built Glenrothes station in the 90s - 3.6 miles south of the town centre - in Thornton.
Now that line is a cycle path, but it still would have been better used for its original purpose.

Pleased that the first #TheSNP #leadership #hustings in #Cumbernauld went so well last night thanks to candidates willing to debate respectfully and party members determined to focus on issues of importance to the people of #Scotland. #livestreaming them all is the right decision and now look forward to chairing next one in #Glenrothes on Friday at 6.30pm and then #Inverness on Saturday youtube.com/live/cdBKjVruT9E?f

Moss on a picnic bench at Balbirnie stone circle (2017) #Glenrothes, #Fife #Mosstodon

A small part of the top of a very elderly and decidedly battered picnic bench. Basically a section of two planks of wood is visible. They have been painted a pale reddish brown and then more recently (but still long, long ago) black. Both coats of paint are chipped and peeling and scratched. At the top of the photo a huge chunk of wood is missing. To the left of the missing chunk, a splinter of wood has left a sort of creek or valley effect which is filled with two different sorts of moss. At the bottom of the photo there's some deeply carved graffiti, a W and some other, less readable letters.

In the centre of the picture, the focus, a cushion of bright green moss has grown in a hole, maybe the size of a fifty pence piece. It's very pleasing.
