"We live in a world where a few people capture unimaginable wealth while billions are denied access to basic needs. Such extreme inequality is not natural or inevitable. It is an effect of the dominant economic system, capitalism, where production is controlled mostly by capital and organized around maximizing and accumulating profit, rather than securing human well-being.

Capital accumulation requires cheapening labour and resources, particularly in the global South. This produces inequalities between classes and leads to uneven development between regions. It also drives ecological breakdown, and while some benefit from the exploitation of our planet’s ecosystems, others suffer the damages."

In a thought-provoking discussion, Paul Krugman speaks with Branko Milanovic on global inequality, emphasizing its complexity beyond national borders. Milanovic's insights on the "elephant curve" reveal how globalization benefits the elite and Asia's middle class but overlooks Western counterparts. Their dialogue unpacks the nuances of economic disparity and calls for deeper exploration. For more, explore the full article here: [Discussion about this post](paulkrugman.substack.com/p/glo) #GlobalInequality #BrankoMilanovic #PaulKrugman #Economics #SocioEconomicInequality #ElephantCurve #IncomeDistribution. Kudos to Milanovic for shedding light on this crucial topic!

Imagine you want to receive donations. However, on your donation page, you have set 5 USD as the minimum requirement for someone to donate. In MYR, that is more than RM20.00. But I only have around RM19.00, and I wonder how I can make a donation to those who require at least 5 USD. I feel bad now, watching their ASMR videos, but at the same time, I can't express my gratitude enough to the artist. I just watched the video for free without donating, and it makes me feel guilty. #AccessibleDonations #SupportArtists #BrokenSystem #GlobalInequality #SmallSupportsMatter #ASMRCommunity #CurrencyBarriers

Episode 5.8: Tech and the Global South with Star Ngei

In this episode, Christina talks with Star Ngei, a maker/hacker who helps raise awareness of Global South technology and innovation through the NGO Global Innovation Gathering (GIG), which hosts a network of makers and makerspaces throughout the Global South. Although it’s hard to generalize across a space as culturally, politically, economically, and geographically diverse as the Global South, Christina and Star discuss how the access of people in the Global South to tech is limited compared to that of people in the Global North and so they have a more creative, non-linear approach to technology. They’re far more open to modifying a piece (or pieces) of technology to fit their specific needs, rather than just using it as it comes out of the box and merely specifically for its intended use. Christina and Star also talk about climate change and what the Global North can learn from the Global South in terms of dealing with it. Lastly, they talk about building community and how, if you’re interested in working to decrease global inequality by helping people in the Global South, the best place to start is by striking up a relationship with a community there first. Unless you want your efforts to be a waste of your time, their time, and resources, don’t just give a group of people in the Global South what you think they need, find out what they think they would find useful.

Another story of the livelihoods of local people in the South sacrificed on the alter of trivial mass entertainment for Northern audiences.

In this case Garifuna fishers on the Honduran coast prohibited from fishing while the equivalent of "I'm a celebrity" is filmed.

Primitive accumulation is alive under a different name.

#Billionaires #Brazil #GlobalInequality #ClimateChange: "Proposals to slap a wealth tax on the world’s super-rich could yield $250bn (£200bn) a year to tackle the climate crisis and address poverty and inequality, but would affect only a small number of billionaire families, Brazil’s climate chief has said.

Ministers from the G20 group of the world’s biggest developed and emerging economies are meeting in Rio de Janeiro this weekend, where Brazil’s proposal for a 2% wealth tax on those with assets worth more than $1bn is near the top of the agenda.

No government was speaking out against the tax, said Ana Toni, who is national secretary for climate change in the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“Our feeling is that, morally, nobody’s against,” she told the Observer in an interview. “But the level of support from some countries is bigger than others.”"

Extortionate Easter eggs and shrinking sweets: fears grow of a ‘chocolate meltdown’

@magdelenehall While I’m more familiar with and, more generally, , I do know the UK has staggering . I did a quick search and notice that has gotten a bit worse in the in since 1980. These metrics should be the measure of whether policies were collectively “Liberal” or not (this is proof they were NOT). If we were to reduce w&i inequality in a transparent and democratic manner then we would be .

Very good article from my Insitute, about climate change and emissions related to the health-care sector.
