Looking forward to today's meeting of the SPR's European Psychotherapy Consortium

Danilo Moggia and I will present on linking measures of psychological distress and cross-cultural analyses.

A brief overview of thoughts and resources can be found in this presentation from last year:

Happy and humbled that research from our international collaboration has made it into the report, discussing the higher prevalence of risk factors for noncommunicable diseases such as smoking, alcohol use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity
cambridge.org/core/journals/bj

We have also more work on this coming hopefully soon, here link to a recent conference poster discussing the lack of appropriate screening for non-communicable diseases

Chapter 4 on the existing gaps in systems is particularly interesting, as it highlights not only the continued gap in provision and access, but also offers suggestions for practice-focused research and work.

An info graphic (Figure 4.1 in the WHO report), titled "A snapshot of key gaps in mental health transformation"

The four gaps and their headlines are

1) Information Gap
Incomplete data
Insufficient research

2) Governance gap
Inadequate policies, plans and laws
Misplaced priorities

3) Resrouces gap
Scant spending
Lack of essential medicines
Scarce workforce
Digital divide

4) Services gap
Poor treatment coverage
Limited range and quality of services

Interesting presentation by Guntars Ermansons (KCL), Neil Carrier (Bristol), and Laura Roe ( ) in our lunchtime webinar on the special section "Psychoactive Agents: Drugs, Morality, and Responsibility" from last year:
medanthrotheory.org/mat/issue/

A quote from the special issue's editorial:
This Special Section explores concepts of morality, responsibility, and agency in relation to psychoactive substances. Such substances have long been seen as especially potent things, ones thought to have the capacity to modify or overcome our own agency, especially in relation to ideas of addiction and intoxication but also ritual and healing. At times such substances even become personified, sometimes as trickster – like characters like John Barleycorn that can trick us into doing things we otherwise would not. Contrastingly, so-called ‘smart drugs’ like modafinil promise to make us ‘more-than-human’ through increasing our stamina and ability to focus, and have been taken up avidly by students seeking advantage in exams and coursework. Furthermore, practices such as microdosing psychedelics offer to broaden our horizons of perception and enhance our human capacities for creativity. These ideas of chemically altered agency and personhood pose questions about the nature of such substances and their markets, including the moral responsibilities of their producers, traders, regulators and consumers.

𝗣𝗧𝗦𝗗 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 – 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱
June is recognized globally as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, with June 27th marking PTSD Awareness Day. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), encouraging open conversations, and supporting those affected by trauma worldwide.

Research shows that around 10% of people globally may experience PTSD in their lifetime, yet many remain undiagnosed or untreated. Symptoms of PTSD and C-PTSD are often misunderstood or misdiagnosed as other mental health or physical conditions, delaying proper care.

Raising awareness is crucial because effective treatments exist, even years after trauma. By educating ourselves and others, we can break the stigma, improve diagnosis, and support healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling, seek professional help—recovery is possible, and you are not alone.

Call for researchers interested in :

9th GACD Funding Call – Management of Multiple Long-Term Conditions
gacd.org/funding/current-call-
🗓️ 15.05. (first stage)

The common call document [pdf gacd.org/perch/resources/admin] lists a range of topics such as , health , stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing it has a specific section on that explicitly refers to our COSMOS work
medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

Screenshot from the common call document of the GACD call, describing further specifications for outcome measures to be used:

Outcome measures
The proposal’s primary outcome measures must be implementation research outcomes to assess MLTC
NCD. With regard to MLTC NCD, applicants are encouraged to explore any combination of chronic
conditions, including mental health disorders and sleep disorders. The specific combination of conditions
should be justified using local or regional epidemiological data about their co-occurrence. Outcome
measures should appropriately address implementation tackling MLTC NCD, and not focus on one
condition. Applicants must also include appropriate interim outcomes and consider the feasibility of health
outcomes.
Proposals should also contain a strategy for measuring other secondary outcomes (or proxy outcomes) that demonstrate the intervention’s real-world effectiveness in the local context and target populations. To improve data standardisation, wherever feasible applicants are encouraged to use measures developed by
the GACD for monitoring patient-centred MLTC NCD outcomes in LMICs. Other health or non-health
outcome measures, especially those identified as important by patient participants and/or critical for
advancing Universal Health Coverage, are also welcome.

Looking for a ?

How about this blog post by about our research showing that people living with severe mental illness suffer high burden of physical illness:

In line with international guidelines, we need to focus on the early detection, prevention and management of physical health problems in people with severe mental illness living in South Asia.
