It is the prerogative of the young to ignore the humble efforts of the old. Nevertheless, I can feel a slight sting: doi.org/10.1038/s41592-024-023 vs. doi.org/10.1109/TCBB.2010.129
Turns out, I made a complete chapter out of that, in my "will-be-finished-soon-or-possibly-never" "textbook", bio.informatik.uni-jena.de/tex. Sigh... Their program name is dope, though.

A single #mutation in dairy #cow-associated #H5N1 viruses increases #receptor #binding breadth, BioRxIV: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

We found that H5 from A/Texas/37/2024, an isolate from the dairy cow #outbreak, has increased binding breadth to #glycans bearing terminal a2,3 sialic acids, the avian receptor, compared to historical and recent 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses. We did not observe any binding to a2,6 sialic acids, the receptor used by human seasonal influenza viruses.

"These dynamic indicate a variety of binding capabilities, and we confirm that one mosaic adhesive trimer (MAT) member shows specificity for surface from a particular prey. Our study shows that the B. MAT protein repertoire enables a broad means for the recognition and handling of diverse prey epitopes encountered during and invasion."
