Today, would many strongly object to making any linkage between religion and concern for others?

John Chrysostom, Constantinople archbishop, urges saving the perishing. He claims salvation not possible w/o a desire for this duty. Perfecting other godly duties but neglecting this one, will gain you no favor from God.

Do we want to stand on 2000 years of teaching, and reject Chrys’ idea that the saved must desire to do what pleases God?

How can you seek out pleasing God through following after neighbors’ advantage?

"Well then, this is natural to man, thus to follow after his neighbors' advantage; but one ought to be persuaded not from this reason, but from what pleases God. For it is not possible to be saved, wanting this; but though thou shouldest exercise the highest perfection of the work and neglect others who are perishing, thou wilt gain no confidence towards God."
