A North Walian oddity for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Parc Bach is either the remains of a prehistoric chambered tomb with some modern additions, or a weird 'druidical folly'. Set in peaceful woods on the shore of Llyn Padarn, close to Castell Dolbadarn. Either way, it's a lovely setting.

Visited June 2012 at the start of a walk up Yr Wyddfa.

A group of megaliths set on top of a grassy mound in woodland. A standing stone on the left, with slabs forming a chamber in the centre. It's a fine morning, and sunlight is filtering through the trees.

Another North-Walian obscurity for #StandingStoneSunday - Cwm Eigiau (possible) chambered tomb.

Speculatively identified as the remains of a Neolithic chambered tomb, nestled in Cwm Eigiau beneath the high ridges of Y Carneddau mountains.

Visited May 2012 on descent from Carnedd Llewelyn and Pen yr Helgi-Du.

Megaliths potentially forming the remains of a collapsed chamber tomb. A large slab is propped diagonally, supported by a large block. The site is at the head of a valley beneath mountain ridges. A high ridge blocks the views across the centre skyline. The valley drops away gently to the right. It's very sunny and the sky is blue.

A North Walian obscurity for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Clogwyn-yr-Eryr (possible) stone row, high on a ridge in the foothills of Y Carneddau mountains. There are views to Hafodygorswen cairn circle in the valley, Pen-y-Gaer Iron Age hillfort and numerous high level Bronze Age cairns on the mountains. The tallest stone has drill holes and has been reused as a gate post at some time.

Passed on my way up to Carnedd Llewelyn, May 2012.

Three stones of a possible stone row on a grassy mountain ridge. The stone on the left is a short stump. The middle stone is a 6 foot tall pillar. The stone on the right lies fallen and is partly buried in the turf. The ground slopes away below the stones down to a valley. High rounded hills rise on the other side. It's hot and sunny and further distant hills fade to hazy blue on the skyline.

Something seriously has to be done about this! Tourists are like a plague of locusts covering towns & villages, using up vital resources in they don't contribute to & are becoming a nuisance to locals as we get no peace & they have little thought for locals only themselves

One of my very favourite sites for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Moel ty Uchaf ('Highest House on the Bare Hill') is a superb cairn circle set in an elevated position on the foothills of Y Berwyn mountain range above Llandrillo. It has extensive views across the Dee towards all the main mountain ranges of North Wales from Aranau to Y Carneddau.

This visit May 2012 on my way up to Cadair Bronwen.

A ring of low stones, standing closely spaced to form a continuous kerb. On the left foreground section of the arc, half a dozen of the stones are much smaller and barely break the surface of the turf, giving the impression of a deliberate entrance into the ring. Stones in the centre of the ring indicate the remains of a burial cairn. The ring stands on a grassy hillside overlooking a broad valley bordered by grassy hills. Beyond that, the skyline is filled with distant mountain ranges. It's partially overcast with cloud but sunny on the circle.

It's annual set-fire-to-the-hillside season here in north wales (where it hasn't rained for weeks). I hate it 😢
(photos of same fire taken about 30mins apart, it's even bigger now)

a small-ish fire on a heathery hillside. you can see some flames and a bit of smokeA photo of the same fire taken about 20 minutes later from further away. It has spread across the hillside and there is a thick plume of grey smoke rising into the blue sky.

Autumn in the northern foothills of the Carneddau mountains, North Wales.

#Wales #Carneddau #GogleddCymru

Looking across a shallow river valley to a skyline of undulating hills. The slopes are divided by snaking drystone walls and there is a smallholding with outbuildings in the centre of the image. The skyline hills are in shadow, but a burst of sunlight has illuminated the area around the buildings. The colours are muted autumn reds and browns, and the sky is overcast with cloud. On the far right horizon there is a small bright patch of blue.
