🇺🇸: The goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is one of the smallest bird species in Europe. With a body length of around nine centimetres, it weighs only between four and seven grams. The goldcrest breeds in Europe, the Middle East, southwest Siberia and the mountains of Central and Middle Asia, and also breeds in Japan. It is basically a coniferous forest dweller with a strong connection to spruce and other short-needled tree species. Goldcrests only eat small arthropods, and the amount of food they eat each day is at least equal to their body weight. The food requirement for young birds, birds moulting or females laying eggs can double.

Another shot of the same Goldcrest, it didn’t stop hopping in the tree until it eventually flew away.

After a few pretty and sunny winter days earlier this week, the weather returned to normal – dull and overcast. So I turned my photographic attention to birds instead of grey winter landscapes. Knowing that the local goshawks are currently preparing for the nesting season, I went looking for them today and yesterday. The male was renovating the nest they used two years ago. It does not mind people milling about, so I managed to take a few okayish photos of it. I caught a glimpse of the female yesterday, but despite being considerably larger than the male, it is very skittish and much harder to photograph. My aim is to get them both in the same photo for the first time this year.

Oh, I also spotted goldcrests and Eurasian treecreepers combing the branches and trunks for hibernating insects and spiders. The goldcrest is the smallest bird in Europe and a pain in the *** to photograph because it simply does not stay still at all :D The pics I got are nothing to write home about, but here's two of them anyway.

Overall, today was even worse. I photographed the male goshawk flying over me in the gloom, but pretty much nothing else. The goldcrests and treecreepers did not cooperate with me at all. Well, hopefully tomorrow will be better :)

I'm constantly amazed at the accuracy of modern cameras. I saw a shadow of a bird, and not recognising it shot into the trees. The camera found the bird and focused on the eye even as it his behind a thick branch! This is a gold crest - Britain's smallest bird.

Yesterday the Goldcrest was my in the Merlin app and I spotted one for the first time.
Today a small group of 5 or 6 came flying by and gave me plenty opportunities to take better photos of them. 🪶

A Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) hanging upside down from a branch, it has a small sharp beak, a bright yellow stripe between two black stripes on its head, its head is grey and its round belly is light grey with a yellow tint to it. A Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) hanging sideways on a branch and seen from the top, it has a small sharp beak, a bright yellow stripe between two black stripes on its head, its head is grey and its round belly is light grey with a yellow tint to it. From this top view, the details in the wings are more visible with white tipped feathers, a slight yellow-green tint and a small black patch.
