Netzprobleme mit dem Pixel 2 XL: Meine Überlegungen zu LineageOS, iodeOS, MicroG und Google Apps
Das Pixel 2 XL meiner Frau läuft derzeit mit iodeOS, einer inoffiziellen Beta-Version für dieses Modell, die MicroG integriert hat. Diese Version befindet sich noch im Entwicklungsstadium und ist daher möglicherweise nicht vollständig ausgereift. Dabei gab es immer wieder Probleme mit der Stabilität der mobilen Daten und der Netzverbindung. Zusätzlich gibt es auch Schwierigkeiten bei der Telefonie: Meine Frau ist oft schwer zu verstehen oder sogar gar nicht erreichbar. Das ist natürlich sehr ärgerlich und unpraktisch.
Diese Probleme könnten aber auch an der Beta-Version von iodeOS liegen, denn Beta-Software enthält oft noch Fehler bei der Netzwerkintegration oder Modemsteuerung. Das ist allerdings eine Vermutung meinerseits, basierend auf dem Wissen über Beta-Versionen und Erfahrungsberichte.
Deshalb habe ich mich informiert und versucht, die technischen Hintergründe besser zu verstehen.
Was ich herausgefunden habe
Nach meinen Recherchen und intensivem Lesen im Netz bin ich zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass die offiziellen Google Apps (GApps) in der Regel eine bessere Netzwerkintegration bieten als MicroG. Das liegt daran, dass die Google Play Services proprietäre Schnittstellen verwenden, die eng mit den Mobilfunkanbietern zusammenarbeiten und Funktionen wie Roaming, VoLTE oder WLAN-Call besser unterstützen. Gerade solche Telefonie-Funktionen sind oft auf diese proprietären Dienste angewiesen. Das ist jedoch eine Vermutung meinerseits, da der Quellcode der Google Play Services nicht öffentlich ist und genauere technische Details nicht vollständig einsehbar sind.
MicroG ist eine freie Nachbildung dieser Dienste und bietet zwar mehr Datenschutz, weil es keine exakten Kopien aller Funktionen enthält, aber dadurch kommt es offenbar öfter zu Problemen bei mobilen Daten, der Netzstabilität und eben auch bei der Telefonie.
GApps auf Custom ROMs – funktioniert das?
Trotz der Tatsache, dass LineageOS ein Custom ROM ist und Google die Play Services nicht direkt mitliefert, kann man offizielle GApps-Pakete (wie MindTheGapps, die von LineageOS offiziell empfohlen werden) problemlos nachinstallieren. Diese enthalten die echten Google Play Services, keine Nachbildungen. Technisch bieten sie daher dieselbe Netzwerkintegration wie auf einem originalen Stock-ROM.
Die Unterschiede in der Netzqualität und Telefonie kommen dann eher von der Custom ROM selbst, den verwendeten Treibern oder der Modem-Firmware.
Mein Plan und meine Erwartungen
Ich werde jetzt LineageOS ausprobieren, weil es eine offizielle Version für das Pixel 2 XL ist, was mir eine gewisse Stabilität und Aktualität verspricht. Vorerst werde ich LineageOS mit MicroG (LineageOS for MicroG) testen, da ich die erhöhte Privatsphäre schätze. Falls weiterhin Probleme mit mobilen Daten oder Telefonie auftreten, werde ich die offiziell empfohlene MindTheGapps-Version installieren, um von der besseren Netzkompatibilität zu profitieren.
Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, ob das so funktioniert oder ob das besser wird, aber es erscheint mir der sinnvollste Weg, um meiner Frau ein stabiles und sicheres Handy bereitzustellen.

draft - things i wanna see with google:
-chrome profiles on chromeOS (if lacros is going away)
-ability to choose the android app apk instead of the pwa for twitter (twitter website only allows 5 profiles, android app has no limitation)
-data segregation options for google accounts on chromeOS and android - for example, when logging into a google account, allow us to click a data segregation button where we can tell chromeos to only allow a few specific websites for that profile. and to not login to any other google services or google apps with that google account. want this for android as well as chromeos
-make the gemini advanced login be separate from a google account. or add the ability to "login with microsoft", "login with openID", "login with apple" in addition to traditional google login so that if we have a one person multiple users setup, we can login to gemini advanced without the baggage of the entire google account. this would sort of go back to data segregation options as well.
another app that could benefit from a long to be separate from a google account would be google chat. if we have a one user multiple user profiles setup, it'd be nice to be able to login to google chat across android / chromeos profiles without carrying the baggage of the entire account's data set.
