During the COVID lockdown, I was perennially bored and spent a lot of time online, as pretty much everyone was. Sometimes I would be on Google Maps, looking around the city or beyond to places I could not go, just to feel a sense of normalcy. I noticed a small, unnamed street next to the Hancock Village townhome complex near where I live, and since Google Maps lets you suggest edits, I thought it would be funny to send one for this random street near the dumpsters. I named it Maranville Street after one of my favorite old-timey baseball players, who has an epic name, Rabbit Maranville, and sent the edit without thinking much of it.

Pamiętacie, jak na początku listopada pisaliśmy o testach nowego trybu oszczędzania energii w Mapach Google? Gigant z Mountain View nie kazał długo czekać na finał.

Funkcja właśnie trafia do użytkowników, choć na start została ograniczona wyłącznie do najnowszej serii smartfonów Pixel 10.

Mapy Google przestaną być „pożeraczem baterii”? Testowany jest nowy tryb monochromatyczny

Nowość jest częścią tzw. Feature Drop i działa po stronie serwera. Jeśli masz Pixela 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL lub 10 Pro Fold (ten ostatni nie jest oficjalnie dystrybuowany w Polsce), możesz już oszczędzać energię podczas nawigacji w zupełnie nowy sposób.

Jak to działa?

Zamiast przekopywać się przez ustawienia, Google postawiło na intuicyjność. Podczas aktywnej nawigacji samochodowej wystarczy nacisnąć przycisk zasilania. Zamiast wygasić ekran, telefon przełączy się w uproszczony, monochromatyczny tryb.

Interfejs w tym widoku jest drastycznie odchudzony:

Znikają kolorowe warstwy mapy i zbędne przyciski (tzw. FABs).
Ukryty zostaje przycisk Asystenta/Gemini oraz wskaźnik prędkości.
Widoczny pozostaje pasek statusu, informacja o najbliższym manewrze (na górze) i podstawowe dane o trasie (na dole).

Dotknięcie ekranu lub ponowne wciśnięcie przycisku zasilania przywraca pełny, kolorowy interfejs.

Gra warta świeczki: nawet 4 godziny więcej

Google twierdzi, że w tym trybie bateria może wytrzymać nawet do 4 godzin dłużej niż przy standardowej nawigacji. To ogromna różnica, szczególnie w długiej trasie, gdy zapomnimy ładowarki samochodowej. Oszczędność wynika głównie z pracy ekranów OLED, które przy czarnym tle zużywają minimalną ilość energii.

Warto jednak pamiętać o ograniczeniach. Tryb oszczędzania energii działa obecnie tylko w orientacji pionowej i wyłącznie w trybie nawigacji samochodowej (rowerzyści i piesi muszą obejść się smakiem). Choć na razie funkcja jest ekskluzywna dla serii Pixel 10, historia pokazuje, że Google często z czasem udostępnia takie nowości na starsze modele Pixel, a docelowo na cały ekosystem Androida.

The voice instructions are inadequate, leaving drivers to ignore or engage in disruption of traffic, risky or dangerous driving.
