sure I remember Got to be There and Rockin’ Robin from when I was a kid. both were Top Five hits at the time. I likely didn’t distinguish them as Michael Jackson songs as opposed to Jackson 5 songs. maybe I did, but I doubt it.
this made the list because of the cover of AIn’t No Sunshine. it was such a revelation when I first heard it not long before I left the states for Costa Rica in 2006. it was the opening track of a mix I had stumbled across online by a dj I had never heard of before and whose name I can no longer recall.
as I recall, “is this Michael Jackson?” was my immediate reaction. it probably didn’t take that much poking around to confirm and find out what record it was on. I’m pretty sure it was pretty cheap to buy at the time. if it had been over $4 or $5 I would probably remember. other than thrift store purchases (which were under $2) most of my used record purchases were in the $2 - $5 range.
this solo debut by MJ was well worth it. besides the Ain’t No Sunshine cover I love Got to be There and I Wanna be Where You Are. I’m sure I can live without Rockin’ Robin, but there is a bit of nostalgic value there too.
