A reviewer of Dusty Groove wrote: "Excellent work from trombonist Grachan Moncur III – famous for his 60s work on Blue Note and with Archie Shepp, sounding as great here as he did on those recordings! The session features Moncur hitting an Archie Shepp-ish, spiritual vein in his playing..." - Wikipedia

Aco Dei De Madrugada (One Morning I Woke Up Very Early) by Grachan Moncur III, released in 1969 on BYG / Actuel.

"..The album features Moncur fronting a European rhythm section -- performing one side of interpretations of Brazilian folk tunes: "Aco Dei De Madrugada" and "Ponte Lo"; and another of two originals: "Osmosis" and "Tiny Temper". Anyone familiar with Moncur's style can't help but appreciate his coloristic slides and slurs, or his marvelous textural splashes of tone, or his individual phrasing, shaped more by his unique vision than any standard trombone slide or valve brass tradition. While his wonderful Blue Note sides were very modernist, these BYG sessions find Moncur at his most expansive -- more groundbreaking work from one of our favorite "new thing" artists" - Dusty Groove

Grachan Moncur III - Some Other Stuff

A seriously talented group—Moncur on trombone, Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Tony Williams on drums—in 1964.

All four compositions are by Moncur, and are definitely in a free-jazz mode, some more successful than others, at least to these ears. All are interesting…

One Step Beyond is an album by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1963 and released on the Blue Note label. This is the first of two albums where McLean replaced the usual pianist with vibraphone player Bobby Hutcherson. As a result, One Step Beyond features a new sound that, while still rooted in hard bop, was more spacious and adventurous than his earlier work and leaned towards post bop and free jazz. The group is rounded out by trombonist Grachan Moncur III, bassist Eddie Khan and drummer Tony Williams.

The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek stated: "One Step Beyond may have been the first volley McLean fired in the direction of the new jazz, and played it safe enough to ride out the hard bop he helped to create, but he cannot be faulted as a bandleader, as this music still sounds fresh, vital, and full of grainy mystery." - Wikipedia

Next on my yearly retrospective is and his African Concepts. This is a renamed reissue of his New Africa album on Seattle's Picc-a-Dilly label. Trombonist Moncur is the most expressionist of any in the pantheon, painting pictures in sound. His anti-war compositions on the earlier Evolution have a direct influence on later artists from (Machine Gun) to (also Machine Gun.) This album maintains the future-prone fervor. youtu.be/KVHSx47T5i0
