#Grasses

Even on a grey and dull December's day, the garden looks beautiful. The grasses and dogwoods glow with autumnal or, rather, wintry colour and the seedheads provide texture.
We leave the old growth until next spring. It is so important for the wildlife. Birds and small mammals still find food from the seeds and berries. Insects overwinter in leaves and seedheads. The old growth also provides shelter for other small creatures over the winter.
Besides, if we cut down everything now, the garden would be bare, unsightly and boring for the next several months.

In this portrait orientation photograph, a paved path curves from the bottom to the left, framed by two small stone (Venetian) lions at the entrance.
The main area of the photograph is filled with seedheads from this year’s perennials and old growth. Tall ornamental grasses have turned golden and glow with colour.
In the centre, an old greengage tree seems to say “I am not young anymore but I am still here”.

New grasslands book out. My review (incl link to where you can order it)
astherivergoesby.wordpress.com
"a great history and introduction to how southeast Australia’s grasslands came to be, how they nurtured (and were nurtured by) the First Nations peoples, how they were an essential resource that lured the colonisers. And how as a result of colonial practices they now are almost destroyed, a rare, endangered, misunderstood and overlooked ecosystem. The book includes a detailed look at some of the dominant, widespread native grass species throughout southeast grasslands, and discusses their potential use in horticulture, landscaping and sustainable agriculture, as well as ecological restoration."

I curate my spaces with art that has a story behind it.

Whether it’s something you found on a trip, or discovered through a connection with an artist—it adds depth and meaning to your space.

When I shot this, I was enjoying a friend's wedding. A breeze lifted the grasses with music from the reception. Later, I saw they looked like musical notes.

I titled it “Musical Grasses.” In it, I see the music of love.

This beautiful, unmistakable native grass is Little Bluestem. #NativePlants #grasses

Tall, thin, rosy blades of grass are decorated with little white seed heads that look like delicate lace.

Good Morning!

Let's go with the thousand and one shades of green today in this forest grass. #green #grasses #textures #GoodMorning

Cascading leaves of Japanese forest grass. The leaves are long, thin, and pointed. With just a touch of sun on the upper parts of our view, there are a thousand and one shades of green.

What are your favorite fall traditions? I want to hear all about them while you take a peek at “Tall Grasses in the Sun.”

You tell me yours, and I’ll tell you mine.

There’s just something about this cozy time of year that makes traditions feel extra special.

Walk into this tranquil meadow in Bernadette Longo's photograph, "Tall Grasses in the Sun." This print captures delicate tips of feathery grass stalks swaying in the breeze, dancing in the sun's rays. Soft, earthy tones and rich textures invite you to lose yourself in the moment.
