New publication: Contrasting responses of particulate and mineral-associated organic #carbon stocks to #grazing exclusion in an #alpine meadow.
doi.org/10.1016/j.agee.2026.11

Figure 7 Zhou (2026): Conceptual diagram of the effects of grazing exclusion on the stocks of soil organic carbon fractions across two soil depths. Soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions include particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC). The percentage changes in SOC fractions represent the variations of the two grazing exclusion treatments relative to grazing across 0–30 cm soil depth. For the other predictor variables, the percentages represent the mean changes of the two grazing exclusion treatments relative to grazing, calculated separately for the 0–10 cm and 10–30 cm soil depths. Orange arrows denote positive effects, while blue arrows indicate negative effects. Ox:Hy ratios, oxidative-to-hydrolytic enzymes ratios.

An #Oregon #cattle #ranch just added #solar without losing #grazing land
The one‑acre, 120‑kilowatt array is the first real‑world installation of #RUTE’s patented, cable‑stayed solar tracker designed specifically to coexist with grazing cattle. RUTE supplies the hardware and is also acting as the developer for its first regional cattle‑plus‑solar demonstrations.

Africa: Grazing and Digging Put Some Herbivores At Greater Risk From Toxic Elements in Soil - New Research: [The Conversation Africa] If you've watched a giraffe browsing in the tree canopy, a white rhino meandering across open grassland or a warthog shuffling around on its knees in South Africa's Kalahari desert, you know what they eat: leaves, grass, shoots and roots. With every mouthful, they swallow something less… newsfeed.facilit8.network/TQmS #Africa #Wildlife #Herbivores #Grazing #SoilHealth

Yesterday we gathered sheep in from our common grazings. This land is grazed communally, a unique feature of crofting in Scotland, and at various times of year we work together to gather in our animals. The land is heather covered in parts, seen in the foreground here. You can see in the distance the distinct lines of the historic feannagan, a traditional method of creating raised planting beds, which would have been planted with potatoes and corn.

"The UK has traditionally been largely self-sufficient in sheep meat. But high feed and farming costs, market uncertainty and low profitability have seen flocks fall to their lowest number ever recorded."

Does this mean that instead of exposed, subsidised #grazing maintaining ever barer #moorland which should be regrowing its tree-cover, we're trending towards using #sheep instead of oil-fueled machinery or herbicides to control the vegetation around solar #PV instalations? Win-win-win-win-win, I'd say. Or as another great account on here calls it #multiSolving @bethsawin

Approved for destruction - Australia a global deforestation hotspot

"More than 57,000 hectares of threatened species habitat was approved for destruction by the Australian government in 2025 – the most in 15 years, according to analysis by the Australian Conservation Foundation."

“A lot of people don’t know that Australia is a global deforestation hotspot … every year, we lose more forest than the loss from the entire palm oil industry in Indonesia...Of the threatened species land clearing, 98% occurred in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales."

The Biggest Takeaways From Our Investigation Into Grazing on Public Lands
Livestock grazing is allowed across 240 million acres of federal land. Our investigation revealed the subsidies propping up ranching, its impact on the environment and the politics underpinning the system.

New publication: Herbivore species and patch heterogeneity modulate #grazing-induced shifts in #soil #nematode trophic structure and energy flux. #biodiversity
doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.70204

Figure 1 in Ma et al. (2025): "The schematic diagram of the experimental design in Songnen meadow steppe. The study area is characterized as a mosaic of high-salinity and low-salinity patches. The experiment was conducted as a completely randomized block design with nine 25 m × 25 m paddocks being arranged into three blocks. Each block consisted of three grazing treatments: cattle grazing, sheep grazing and ungrazing as a control. From 2017 to 2020, a total of three mature cattle with an average body weight of 350.0 ± 10.5 kg or fifteen sheep with an average body weight of 35.0 ± 1.6 kg were grazed during the initial 2 weeks of each month from June to August, producing comparable moderate intensities."

Wealthy Ranchers Profit From Public Lands. Taxpayers Pick Up the Tab.
---

A ProPublica and High Country News investigation found that government programs supporting grazing on public lands prop up a wealthy few while harming the environment. The Trump administration is supercharging the system.

Funny how that works:

"The wealthy profit from public lands, and taxpayers pick up the tab"

"Roughly two-thirds of grazing on Bureau of Land Management land is controlled by just 10% of permit holders. "
