Flying over the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The red coloration is caused by salt-loving bacteria that thrive in the water’s high salinity. The lake is actually half red and half blue — it’s divided by a causeway that isolates the northern arm seen here, allowing the salt content to reach saturation levels, while the southern arm is fed by fresh river waters and remains blue. It’s a striking sight.

Great Salt Lake slipping back into ‘scary low’ water levels

Drought and water consumption were causing the level of the Great Salt Lake to fall to alarmingly low levels. On Tuesday, July 29, the lake level was near 4,192 feet, while the north arm was about 4,191.5 feet.
