"Scientists Found 7,000-Year-Old Mummies in the Desert That Don’t Share DNA With Modern Humans

This ancient people lived in the Sahara when it was a much more welcoming environment.

Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story:

• Two 7,000-year-old mummies from the Takarkori rock shelter in the Sahara have been found to be from a group with a previously unknown ancestry.

• DNA analysis of the mummies, which are the remains of female herders from a time when the Sahara was more humid and known as the Green Sahara, did not show the expected Sub-Saharan genes.

• The Takarkori individuals are most closely related to other North African peoples who diverged from Sub-Saharan populations long before."

"The Chadian authorities are currently drafting a tourist development plan and African Parks hopes it will be finalized by the first half of next year.

'The only way of self-funding the preservation of this heritage is tourism, said Hamid Kodi, 28, the deputy director of RNCE.

African Parks is the second biggest employer in the province after the state, with 149 staff.

The NGO, which oversees around 20 parks across Africa, has previously faced accusations of 'neo-colonialist practices' and rights violations.

In Ennedi, African Parks promotes a more responsible management and its 'support' for local people, in particular by assigning 'management to young people in the region', Kodi, who himself comes from Ennedi, said."

#AfricanHumidPeriod

'Here we report ancient genomic data from the Central Sahara, obtained from two approximately 7,000-year-old Pastoral Neolithic female individuals buried in the Takarkori rock shelter in southwestern Libya. The majority of Takarkori individuals’ ancestry stems from a previously unknown North African genetic lineage that diverged from sub-Saharan African lineages around the same time as present-day humans outside Africa and remained isolated throughout most of its existence. Both Takarkori individuals are closely related to ancestry first documented in 15,000-year-old foragers from Taforalt Cave, Morocco'

The Sahara’s Secret Past: When Deserts Turned Green
A recent study reveals that North African humid periods, when the Sahara Desert turned green, occurred due to Earth’s orbital precession around the Sun and were suppressed during ice ages. This research, utilizing a new climate model, advances the understanding of these humid periods and the significant environmental changes in the Sahara.
