When you discourage cheating, that's authoritarian behavior, setting yourself up for haves lording over have-nots. Whoever can game the rules more effectively gets to be endlessly cruel to everyone else. Minimaxxers rule your server, and nobody has any fun.

When you discourage griefing, then even people following the rules can get in trouble for being dicks to other people. And people who refuse to follow the rules won't get in trouble as long as they're getting along with everyone else.

If someone is causing you grief, you stop playing with them. That's how it works in Kindergarten, that's how it should work in video games. It makes no sense to restrict everyone, purely to allow griefers to play with you.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. But I find something enraging about the sight of this man giggling about spending four months ruining the gaming time of people who couldn't fight back.

So, a poll then. Griefing* in online games: OK, or not?

*Define griefing how you like. For me, anything where the point is to ruin the experience of other players who cannot effectively fight back without gaining you anything significant, especially where the people you're disrupting need to pass what you're doing to progress. So this is griefing, but eg. camping a gate in null-sec in Eve would not be, because you'd get loot out of it and because you expect pirates behind every gate in null sec.

I played 7 #Dota games today and in all 7 games 1 or 2 people were #griefing. Literally griefing, e.g. support walking behind me and stealing last hits when I was midlaner, someone picking Tusk for hard support and dying 14 times in 12 minutes.
