USA as a failing state: Food Security 🥚

“Salmonella outbreak tied to eggs sickens dozens across 7 states”

‘The #AugustEggCompany recalled about 1.7 million brown organic and brown cage-free egg varieties distributed to #GroceryStores between February and May because of the potential for salmonella, according to a posted announcement Friday on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

At least 79 people in seven states have gotten a strain of #salmonella that was linked to the eggs, and 21 people have been hospitalized. the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The recall covers #Arizona, #California, #Illinois, #Indiana, #Nebraska, #NewMexico, #Nevada, #Washington and #Wyoming.’

San Diego becomes first US city to ban digital-only grocery store discounts

San Diego City Council Monday passed an ordinance banning from offering digital-only deals in the city, the first of its kind in the nation

The ordinance, which must still go through a second reading in April, is intended to help those who might not have the access or knowledge to use digital coupons. Many grocery stores offer deals through phone apps or otherwise online only

A tip for avoiding #Amazon is to check your local #ethnic #grocerystores & independent (non chain) #discountstores. You'll likely find it cheaper & bonus no shipping fees/min.
I found this cosmetic back applicator at a #Korean grocer. I was looking for one to apply a glycolic acid toner & found one here for only $4 CAD. On Amazon their cheapest one was $20+.
I found this travel security door lock for only $6 at Dollar Smart. They sell for $16+ on Amazon.

Photo of a purple handled cosmetic back applicator for lotions. The applicator head is green. The cellophane packaging has Korean labelling & there is an orange pricing sticker with 3.99 on it.
Next to the back applicator is the package of a portable door lock with the included instructions/manual and black travel pouch it came with. There is an orange price sticker on the box has 5.99 on it.

Food security is not just an urban thing.

Read the article: resilience.org/stories/2025-01

"In his...book Barons: Money, Power and the Corruption of America’s Food Industry, antitrust expert Austin Frerick writes that the gutting...regulations has allowed companies like Walmart to amass a level of dominance not seen in US history...local ownership helps guarantee decision making about how a store is run & what it stocks are based on the community benefit."

How Illinois Is Bringing Grocery Stores Back to Main Street
by Joe Engelman, originally published by Barn Raiser
January 15, 2025

A team at Western Illinois University, bolstered by a first-of-its-kind initiative, is helping towns across the state democratize their food economy.

Teaser image credit: Author supplied. Residents of Cairo, Illinois, celebrate the opening of Rise Community Market in 2023, holding signs that read, “We are no longer a food desert.”

Cairo’s situation may be unique, but it’s not unusual in losing its grocery store. Limited or no access to food tends to be thought of as an urban phenomenon, but it affects rural communities just as much. Seventy-six counties nationwide don’t have a single grocery store—and 34 of those counties are in the Midwest and Great Plains. According to a 2021 Illinois Department of Public Health report and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Access Research Atlas, 3.3 million Illinois residents live in food deserts. (The USDA defines a rural food desert as any low-income community where the nearest grocery store is 10 or more miles away). To combat this growing reality, in August 2023, Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed into law the Illinois Grocery Initiative, a first-of-its-kind $20 million program that will provide capital, technical assistance and a range of services to open or expand grocery stores in under-served and low-income neighborhoods across the state.

Plastics #contamination in ‘bay area’ foods… ‘We detected plastic chemicals in 86% of the foods we tested.”

At least one of the 18 chemicals was found in every baby food, prenatal supplement, human breast milk, yogurt, and ice cream product that we tested, to name only a few categories. We also found plastic chemicals in all the products we tested from Starbucks, Gerber, Chobani, Straus, Celsius, Blue Bottle, RXBAR, Coca-Cola, Tartine, and Ghirardelli.

Plastic chemicals were also in practically all the upscale and healthy products we tested; we tested raw milk and beef straight from the farm, 22 organic foods, and 20 healthy groceries from Whole Foods. Apart from O Organics eggs, all of those products contained plastic chemicals.

Well... things I learned about Lidl and Aldi:

* Aldi has better tasting Greek yogurt.

* Aldi has better mandarins.

* Aldi wants a bloody quarter to get a cart. Lidl does not.

* Aldi appears to me more expensive, but that's hard to tell because their website's pricing does not correspond to the in-store pricing.

* Neither are great at frozen vegetarian selections.

I used to be a cashier for a busy grocery store. Most people have a basic understanding of how the conveyer belt at the checkout counter works. But a few people missed that memo. Usually, if someone wasn't placing their goods on the moving belt, I'd switch it off. But one time, as I bagged up the preceding customer's groceries, I decided to leave it on to see what the next customer would do.

Rather than put a single thing on the moving conveyer belt, they balanced a cart full of groceries on the little ledge that separates the conveyer belt from where they stood. The precarious wall of groceries was impressively tall. They managed to balance eggs, bread, canned goods, and even a bag of potatoes on that no man's land.

“Food deserts are not an inevitable consequence of poverty or low population density, and they didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened. That something was a specific federal policy change in the 1980s. ... Food deserts will not go away until that mistake is reversed.”
