They always grow really good when you're not ready to plant them out. This is all the squash, cucumbers, and melons. Everything good except one watermelon pot and I put more seed in it tonight in case the half sprouted thing doesn't grow a true leaf. They were all planted about 2 weeks ago.

A photo showing 3 plant trays with about 2 dozen pots that have squash, melons, and cucumbers in them that were planted 2 weeks ago. There are bush type acorn, bush type butternut, black beauty zucchini, yellow summer squash, saved marketer cucumber, saved muncher cucumber, saved sugar baby watermelon, saved Minnesota midget melon, saved green flesh honeydew melon.

Tomato progress. So far nice stocky tomatoes since I've been able to keep it cool. The round pots are a mix of my experimental soil that killed all but one of the peppers.. 🀣 and some more recycled soil. The saved Campari seed ones are doing good and might be far enough along to pick a winner. Might pull a few and transplant if I get to it soon. The tomatillo is doing good too.

A photo of 20 tomato plants and 7 tomatillo plants in two plant trays. One tray is 18 square pots, the other has 9 round pots. The tomatoes are 4-5 inches tall or 10cm ++. ;) There are Chadwick Cherry, Amish Paste, Orange Flamme, Principe Borghese, and San Marzano plus the Rio Grande Tomatillo. These are all from saved seeds.A photo showing 6 tall 3.5 inch square pots with 3-4 saved Campari tomato seedlings in each pot. They are just starting to grow their first true leaves.

Tomatoes and tomatillo thinned to one, and the 2024 Gravenstein scion wood rooting attempt had lots of leaf. I put a little rooting hormone in the water but it's old so I've ordered some new. The cuttings are bagged and off to the side so they're not getting full light.

The tomatillo need two plants to pollinate better so 2 extra becomes 4.A photo showing saved Campari tomato seedlings in six tall square pots. There are 3-4 seedlings in each pots. They were all up, uncovered, and off the heat 2 days ago.A photo showing 1 year old Gravenstein apple scion cuttings that have leaves growing. There are four of them. They are in a plastic lidded container that has a hole cut in the lid and it has water in it. They had been stored in moist sealed bags in a refrigerator and the ends were callused up so it's possible they will make roots.

Someone forgot to plant some saved Campari tomato seed so those are 8 days behind the others. Someone also plucked some things and potted them up as extras.

A photo showing a seed starting area that has 3 plant trays with mostly tomato seedligns and some tomatilloes. The left tray was planted on April 1 and has 18 square pots. The middle tray is transplants from the left tray and has 9 recycled round pots with 4 tomatillo, 3 Chadwick cherry, and 2 Flamme tomatoes. The right tray has 6 tall square pots covered with 3 clear bags that have freshly planted saved 'Campari' or 'Mountain Magic' tomato seeds and are on a heat mat. They come from a hybrid tomato so they are not exactly true but last years saved seeds were VERY good tomatoes that grew excellent. There are two 100 watt LED light panels above the trays but they are only turned up about 50% or so at a height of a couple of feet.

All saved tomato seeds from last year have sprouted up and the tomatillo seeds I gathered from the ground in the garden a month ago are up too. Heat mat turned off. They were started on April 1.

A photo of a plant tray with 18 square pots that have new seedlings growing in them. 15 are tomatoes and 3 are tomatillo. The varieties are Amish paste, Chadwick cherry, San Marzano, Flamme, Principe Borghese, and Rio Grande tomatillo. In the upper right is a black container with blue lid that has a hole in it with 4 pieces of apple scion wood sticking out. They have been in cold storage for a year and seem to be alive and have callused up on the end so they are in water to see if they make roots.

First tomatoes are up, peppers are growing fast, and some new growth on the overwintered Red Marconi sweet pepper that I pruned and fertilized.

A photo showing a new tomato seedling that is up and leaves out. It is a Principe Borghese tomato as indicated on the plant tag. Left of it are tomatilloes starting to sprout but not up. There is some leaf lettuce visible in the upper right. The seedlings are in tall 3.5 inch square pots in a 1020 tray.A photo showing a Flamme tomato seedling. Some of the plants are more than 4 inches tall or 10 cm.A photo showing a jungle of different plants in a 1020 tray in the corner of an enclosed grow tent. The main feature is a saved from last year Red Marconi sweet pepper plant. It is starting to grow new leaves. It has verbena plants growing around it with pink/purple flowers that are in separate pots. There is also a rose campion/Lychnis and grape vine growing in other pots.

Basil is looking good, I've kept a loose cover over it so it's not drying out fast. Peppers are starting to grow fast with roots seen in the smaller pots and the latest transplants in the big pots aren't dying so maybe not over fertilized but we'll see.

A photo showing a tray of basil with 18 square pots. There are 8 varieties of basil which are, Genovese, Italian Long Leaf, Holy Green, Thai, Lemon, Lime, Dark Opal, and Spicy Globe. They are all green except the Dark Opal that is purple-ish.A photo showing two trays with pepper seedlings. Or chilies. They are Red Marconi, Jalapeno, and California Wonder 300 varieties. The right tray has 7 gallon sized square 'bag' pots. The left tray has 18 3.5 inch tall-type square pots. The left tray is sitting on top of some blocks, the pots are not as tall as the gallon pots.

The geraniums are greening up slowly after being under the lights for a week. I've turned the lights down some since the lettuce seemed to be suffering as it got taller. The grape cutting from last year that had a verbena I saved in it is growing fast! The saved Red Marconi isn't doing much but I haven't fertilized or pruned it either. Extra details in ALT about tent and LED lights.

A photo showing 4 plant trays with various plants. There is lettuce in the lower left, geraniums in the upper left, and verbena, sweet pepper, grape, and Lychnis in the lower right. They are all raised up on a cage frame of cube storage things. This is inside a 4 foot square grow tent that is about 78 inches tall, That's 1200 mm square by 2000 mm tall. It has a full zippered front and two zippered half doors on each side along with vents on each side and one or two in the top. It has a covered see through window in the front too for peaking without opening up. It currently costs $80.99 USD for this exact tent right now. I've used it for two plant starting seasons now along with Spider Farmer SF1000 LED Grow Light panels with Samsung LM301H LEDs which are adjustable and rated at 100 watts each and currently priced at $89.99 USD. One panel covers a 3x3 foot area, 90x90mm, for the growth stage of plants. The 'blooming' stage is rated as a smaller area but this is for 'crop' blooming. πŸͺ΄ I currently have 4 of these panels in the tent that gives full coverage and will let the lights be raised up higher if needed. I use two others in place of 6 fluorescent tube lights for seed starting in a warmer area. I can go directly from indoors to full sun without plant damage with these lights.

The Red Marconi and Jalapeno peppers, or chilies, are getting their first true leaves. The California Wonder 300 are all up 100% from last years bought seed, 100% dud on saved seeds. I'll have to make sure to grow one of them well into a non green color for seeds.

A photo showing a Red Marconi pepper chili seedling that has it's first true leaves and has been started from seeds saved from 2024. It's is a sweet pepper variety that will grow a large long 3 sided pepper that will turn red in color. It is in a taller type 3.5 inch / 90mm square pot. It has a white plant stake that has 'red marconi' hand written on it.A photo showing a Jalapeno pepper chilli seedling in a square pot with a plant stake that says TAM Jalapeno on a printed label. It is from a saved seed from a 2024 pepper. It is starting to form it's first true leaves. The plant is about 50 mm tall. There are other seedlings around it in pots.A photo showing a 1020 tray with 13 square pots of Red Marconi and Jalapeno seedlings.A photo of a 1020 tray that has 5 small 50mm square pots that each have two California Wonder 300 seedlings in them. Lettuce getting bigger. Soil temp up to 60F / 16C. The romaine has roots coming out the bottom of the pots, didn't look at the others.

A square cropped photo showing 8 soft plastic square bag pots in a 1020 plant tray. The pots have lettuce plants in them, some pots have multiple plants. The farthest two pots have Crisphead Iceberg. The next closest two have Lolla Rosso. The nearest 4 pots have Parris Island Romaine. There is a small dial probe thermometer in one of the pots and it reads about 60F. There are some pinkish verbena flowers on the right of the photo that are below the lettuce.

The overwintered volunteer verbena February 20, 2025.

A square cropped closeup photo of a pink looking verbena flower cluster. There are about 20 flowers visible. The center of the flowers have a white-ish fuzzy oval area with a yellow bit in the middle.A square cropped photo showing a couple of verbena flower clusters. They are a bright or vivid pink color of sorts. There are over a dozen individual flowers. The leaves of the plant are sort of red looking. There's a pepper on the 1 year old Red Marconi plant I potted up and have indoors for the winter. Some closeup photos of the lettuce too. February 20, 2025 photos.

A square cropped closeup photo of a small pepper growing in too cool conditions indoors. The plant has few leaves, some other blossoms are visible too, and there are some verbena leaves too.A square cropped closeup photo of a lettuce plant. It is bright green with some red tinge. It might be a crisphead iceberg since the supposed lolla rosso doesn't have any red. It doesn't really matter, it's lettuce.A square cropped closeup photo of lettuce in a square black container indoors. It has a plant stake labeled with an L because it's suppose to be Lolla Rosso lettuce but I think it's crisphead iceberg. It is a bright green color.A square cropped closeup photo of Parris Island Romaine lettuce. There are multiple plants in a square black plastic pot. The white plant stake has a P on it. The color of the leaves is a deep green.

February 17 lettuce update. It warmed up a little downstairs and the soil temp is over 55F/13C.

A square cropped photo showing 8 soft plastic square bag pots in a 1020 plant tray. The pots have small lettuce plants in them, some pots have multiple plants. Each pot has a tall skinny plant stake with a letter marked on it to identitfy it. The farthest two pots have a C on the tag which is for Crisphead Iceberg. The next closest two have an L on the tag for Lolla Rosso. The nearest 4 pots have a P on the tag for Parris Island Romaine. It's possible the Crisphead and Lolla Rosso are mixed up since C marked pots have red showing on the leaves. There are some empty blue trays/tubs and some yellow and black panels with holes to the right. Also on the right is one partial bright pink flower cluster from a verbena plant. Everything is inside a 4x4 foot grow tent that is about 7 foot tall. It has a reflective coating inside. The lettuce is raised up to a height of about 3 feet. The flowers are about 1.5 foot up. This makes it easier to attend to and it's warmer higher up in the tent since there is no air circulating.

I put the lettuce starts in larger pots. Divided the romaine since I had a couple of pots that didn't sprout. The seeds were planted about 3 weeks ago but it's cold in the basement so growing is slow.

A square cropped photo showing 8 soft plastic square bag pots in a 1020 plant tray. The pots are partially filled with potting mix and have small lettuce plants in each pot. They are inside a grow tent that zips closed, there various other plant trays and things visible and some violet or pink looking flowers on the left from other overwintering plants. Apparently we eat Burgerville about once every three years. It’s more that we don’t do fast food that much. Burgerville is amazing.
