Large #protests spread across US cities on Saturday – including #Minneapolis, #NewYorkCity, #SanFrancisco, #Boston and Providence, Rhode Island – after 37-year-old #AlexPretti, a registered nurse living in Minneapolis, was shot dead by federal agents.
The wave of demonstrations come just one day after thousands marched through the streets of Minneapolis to protest against #US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Protesters again braved the extreme cold to speak out against the agency and show support for Pretti and others who have been harmed by the surge of #immigration agents who have flooded the city in recent week.
Thousands more rallied in Union Square in #NYC, with footage showing demonstrators shouting: “Say it once, say it twice, we will not put up with #ICE!”

Almost 15,000 nurses who work for three separate hospital systems have been on strike since 12 January, holding out for increased staffing, better safety in hospitals, and improved #healthcare benefits. The #NewYork State #Nurses Association (NYSNA) has pointed to the giant pay packages that hospital CEOs have received, at a time when #nurses say there are too few of them to adequately care for patients.
The #strike has pulled support from #ZohranMamdani, the #NewYorkCity mayor, and Bernie Sanders, the democratic #socialist Vermont senator, both of whom joined striking nurses outside a Mount Sinai #hospital on Tuesday.

Marc Prokosch, an attorney representing the family, said the family has an active asylum case and shared paperwork showing the father and son had arrived to the #US at a port of entry, meaning an official crossing point.
“The family did everything they were supposed to in accordance with how the rules have been set out,” he said. “They did not come here illegally. They are not criminals.” He said there was no order of #deportation against them and he believes the father and son have remained together in detention.

Two protesters have been blinded by so-called “less-lethal” munitions deployed by federal officers during an anti- #ICE #protest last week in Santa Ana, California, according to reports.
Widely seen video recorded at the Santa Ana protest showed a homeland security agent shoot Kaden Rummler, 21, in the face with a less-lethal munition at a distance of only a few feet. Doctors found glass shards and plastic fragments in his skull and a fragment of metal lodged just shy of his carotid artery.

On Tuesday, she plans to introduce a bill in the House of Representatives urging the #US to end the political and economic dominance of billionaire #oligarchs, halt the corporate subsidies and tax advantages that fortify their power and reinvest in the American people to defend democracy from authoritarianism.
The legislation is supported by #OurRevolution, a political organisation that spun out of the senator #BernieSanders’s 2016 presidential run, which is launching a “#DefundTheOligarchy” campaign with research showing that individuals and corporations who funded Trump’s election received a staggering return on their investment.
Until the rich are taxed fairly, until international flight of capital is constrained, there is little hope for democracy.

The comments section is even more disappointing. The #Guardian editor picked one correct response blaming Western analysts for only going back to 1979 while forgetting 1953, yet predictably, “Islam’s” compatibility with democracy dominates the discussion. Never mind that the Bible and New Testament contain nothing about democracy either, shouting “#Islam” when #Iran is a #Shia state reveals ignorance.
Iranian intellectuals of that era, including Ali Shariati (a sociologist and leading revolutionary theorist), studied with Sartre, Fanon, and Gurvitch in Paris and created hybrid political theories. Shariati combined Marxist concepts like class struggle with specifically Shia Islamic ideas, advocating “radical democracy” where state legitimacy derives from public reason and collective will (freedom, equality, and spirituality). He also proposed “committed/guided” democracy, with intellectuals raising consciousness during revolutionary transition. The Tudeh Party (Iran’s communist party) initially allied with clergy against the Shah but was brutally suppressed after 1979.
The Shia-Sunni distinction matters: the 1979 revolution was built on reinterpretations of Shia doctrines - Khomeini’s reimagining of Shia messianism (which had been essentially occult for most of its existence) and Shariati’s revolutionary Shia Islam. This has little to do with generic “Islam” as invoked by right-wing trolls on social media or in comment sections of liberal media, where they air the propaganda of Islamophobia and white supremacy.

The coup installed and reinforced the Shah’s autocratic rule, which directly created the conditions that produced the 1979 revolution and the current theocratic regime.
