Trump Is Said to Propose Opening California Coast to Oil Drilling
Since then, #drilling has been prohibited in #California state waters, which extend 3 miles from the shoreline. There has been limited drilling, & no new leasing, in federal waters off CA since the mid-1980s.
The plan would also require new #oil & #gas leasing in the eastern #GulfOfMexico…. That could prompt pushback from #Republicans from #Florida, who have opposed new drilling there ever since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig disaster devastated the state’s tourism industry.

If you've ever wanted to learn more about the Gulf of Mexico, have you considered the Wikipedia page? It's pretty solid.
In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, and did his best to strong-arm newsrooms into using its new moniker, the Gulf of America. Nine months, and many executive orders later, how is it going? Nieman Lab's Joshua Benton says the new name hasn't stuck in media, or in general use — to the extent that a Trump-loving retirement community in Florida refused to rename Gulf of Mexico Drive to Gulf of America Drive. Here's more.

Wings of the Horizon
In this photograph, a dark ocean stretches across the foreground, its surface gently rippled by low waves. The sky above is overcast, painted in muted shades of blue that suggest a quiet, contemplative hour. Just above the horizon, hundreds of black skimmers (Rynchops niger) surge through the air in a sweeping formation. Their silhouettes—long-winged and knife-beaked—fill the frame from edge to edge, extending beyond its borders as if the flock cannot be contained. Out at sea, they move as one: a living ribbon of flight etched against the sky’s soft gloom.

'I wanted to check in and see how much “Gulf of America” had stuck in news media. The answer is: not very much.'
NiemanLab: Nine months later, that body of water down south is still the “Gulf of Mexico” to news outlets. “The news cycle has very much moved on; Trump leaves reporters no shortage of things to write about. But I wanted to check in and see how much ‘Gulf of America’ had stuck in news media. The answer is: not very much.”

Not only is #HurricaneMelissa one of the strongest #hurricanes to reach the #GulfOfMexico, but it's probably the latest in the year a Cat-5 hurricane has ever formed.
I predicted this phenomena nearly a decade ago. #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange (an earlier link has disappeared into the bitbucket.)

🥱 Oh, the groundbreaking revelation that the Gulf of Mexico is *still* called the Gulf of Mexico! 🌊 Apparently, news outlets have been too busy discovering fire to rename it "The Ocean Formerly Known As..." 🙄
