Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each of the 54 gull species known to mankind (thus far)!

Today: Short-billed gull

As I promised you last time, here are some cool facts about the short-billed gull, who is closely related to the common gull we discussed earlier.

You remember the word "mew"? This species was described as the "short-billed mew gull" in 1831. It used to be classified as a sub-species of the common gull and was only very recently (2021!) classified as its own distinct species due to significant differences in genetics, plumage, morphology, and vocalization - so basically every aspect. :D

The short-billed gull can be found in costal areas and inland wetlands in Alaska and North Canada. They winter along the Pacific coast down to the Sacramento Valley and rarely migrate to eastern North America and East Asia. In 2003, one (1) short-billed gull even found their way to Europe.

Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each one of the 54 gull species currently known on planet Earth!

Today: Common Gull

Even though its name is "common gull", it is a very special gull indeed. Why, you ask? Well, it's a gull, so duh? ❤️

It is a medium-sized gull that can be found from Iceland and Scotland to Eastern Russia. They migrate further south in winter and can thus also be found in the Mediterranean Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the seas around China and Japan.

It has three subspecies: the common gull, the Russian common gull, and the Kamchatka gull. The latter is considered a distinct species rather than a subspecies by some experts.

The closely related short-billed gull (which I will show you next, hehe) used to be included in the common gull species before becoming its own distinct species. The two were formerly known as "mew gulls".

FUN FACT
The word "mew", an onomatopoeic word used to desribe the sounds of gulls, is related to the German word "Möwe" (= gull). The newer word gull however has Celtic roots and has been used since the 1400s in English.

If my research is correct, then this is probably what we call "sílamáfur" in Icelandic or "lesser black-backed gull". ("Lesser"? How rude.) They like insects, which is probably what this one was out looking for this far inland near Hveragerði. #birds #gulls #iceland #nature

Moments after this, they both just flew off. The tide had covered their beach and it was either float or fly.

The gull to the left now only had one leg on sand, the water still rising, and the gull to the left has flown up to jump on it.

One day on the beach, I heard gulls incessantly screaming. These two. At some point, I thought their beaks were stuck together.

Two gulls, side by side, standing on the remnants of a beach, with an incoming tide surrounding there. Their beaks are are clasped together, the gull on the right has it's wings outstretched, with the left wing hiding the face of the gull to the right, it's right wing touching the water, and its left foot in the air.

Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each of the 54 gull species inhabiting our beautiful planet.

Today: Heermann's Gull

You probably guessed it, the name refers to a dude, namely 19th century explorer Adolphus Lewis Heermann.

As you can see, this species looks quite different from most other gull species; its body is much darker. Even their call differs from most other gulls' calls. So, this cutie is a bit easier to recognize than most of its fellows!

90% of their population lives in California, where they can often be seen together with brown pelicans from whom they steal food such as small fish or marine invertebrates.

Unfortunately, their status is "Near Threatened" because of climate change (-> habitat loss, less food) and because apparently people used to disturb them during breeding season to steal their eggs?! That's why Isla Rasa, where most of them breed, was declared a sanctuary in 1964.
