Why are these types of guppies not more mainstream?

"The authors of this latest paper decided to test the Ebbinghaus illusion across two species that inhabit very different sensory environments: ring doves and guppies."

At the end of last year, I wrote a rather lengthy article for the swedish guppy club newsletter, hoping it would be published in the january 2025 release. Sadly, they haven't published it yet, apparently there has been too few contributions this year and they have yet to publish any newsletter at all.

It would be a waste to have it go unpublished, so I just finished translating it and posted it to my Medium.

I did something I didn't think I'd ever do... I handed in some ~200 (most of my lines) and some ~2kg of to my LFS in exchange for .

My plan going ahead is to focus first and foremost on larger species, keep just 6 large tanks with minimal maintenance instead of 28 small breeders that need daily work.

I'm also determined to switch my aquarium focus to "minimal-work" with possibly a small selection of other .

Still my favorite line!

Back when I originally got my hands on them, the double sword expression and filigran was ~ 1/10 male. The rest were either bottom swords or lacked the filigran.

In the latest generation, they are all showing ds and filigran! even that one male with poor cadual fin in the video still show some trace of a top sword!

Gotta wait and see what next 1-2 gen looks like; but it'd be amazing if TS and filigran have jumped chromosome 😁

Last week I donated the pond fish (, , and ), today I donated the last batch of the tropical microfish (, ) project. All that's left at home now are , , , keyhole , and the old loaches.

i'm not getting more corys or loaches; but they aren't disturbing any fish or eating fry so they get to stay.

will consolidate to just guppies, ancistrus, and (neos) going forward. and my rare :)

I got a new group of Full Gold the other day! Hopefully there won't be an issue with scoliosis this time. The two males I brought home also have near perfect head cover. Most of the store supplied ones have a poor head cover; which is not ideal for breeding because they are a pond line not aquarium line. Focus should be on top view.

January 19, 2011 – Fishy

ne day, sometime around 1980 when I was 12 or 13 and living in Antigua, I caught a few tiny fish—probably guppies—from a local stream. I brought them home and placed them in a small one-gallon glass bowl, the kind you might find holding a single goldfish. To my surprise, they lived for many weeks.…

I used to be ambivalent towards #guppies - though catfish remain my favorite #fish, the guppy group in my #aquarium is growing on me.

They are goofy but so stunning at the same time. It‘s crazy how an animal that looks like *that* is somehow deemed a basic and boring fish. Scarcity seems to play a role in how certain species are valued in the hobby.

Anyway, getting an aquarium has been one of the best decisions of my recent life, I can spend hours in front of that thing and not get bored.

Shot of one of the guppies in my aquarium. It is iridescent, has an intricate, maze like pattern over its whole body and a yellow fan tail with black markings. Green and pink plants are visible in the background

tried to record my other female lines, but they aren't as docile as the black one 😅

hoping to get my hands on the full red koi albino female line from 2022 this year - no one has imported to europe yet and my patience is running low 😉

There is an entire subset of enthusiasts who care more about behavior than the colors or shape.

To these are meh. Heck, even some veteran folks will attests that guppies don't offer much in terms of interesting behavior.

But over time, I have seen a lot of surprising behavior. i.e. A biting a male guppy followed by an entire swarm of angry black-eyed guppies collectively attacking said betta. Or one of my females who have learned to "unlock" pellets.

The finally ended. 44 hours. Tonight would have been rough compared to yesterday since it's going to be -12°C and I wouldn't be able to pull another all-nighter keeping the fire alive.

The tanks have somehow kept warmer than the itself and the last measure (just now) at 13°. I'm happy to announce all (and ) alive; albeit incredibly sluggish. Heating the room at max now so hopefully temperatures will return to sanity by the morrow!

This morning, most of the house was 10° but the had managed to retain heat at 19°C. The ambient temperature of the house has been in steady decline. Still no power. I measured 12.2°C in the and the coldest at 15°C. I don't think my will survive the night 😭

If I lose them I don't know what I'll do. The irony being that I'm moving to an apartment next month where none of these issues will be present. It's like the universe has planned this out...

Some half-black male #guppies that I plan to breed. I had no expectations that my F1 cross of a double-sword Neon guppy and a generic half-black female would lead to anything noteworthy, but I very much like that flaming tail. The second male will be bred to the first male’s sister, and vice versa. We’ll see what the F2 generations produce, as it’s mainly the dominant genes expressed in the F1 generation.
