Zusammenfassung: Stand der Innovationsforschung nach Schumpeter
Der Begriff "Innovation" wurde maßgeblich durch den Ökonomen J.A. Schumpeter geprägt. Mit der deutschen Übersetzung seines 1939 erschienenen Werks "Business Cycles" wurde der Begriff fest im wissenschaftlichen Sprachgebrauch verankert.
Schumpeter definiert Innovation als "Durchsetzung neuer Kombinationen" und unterscheidet fünf Fallkategorien:

Herstellung eines neuen Produkts oder einer neuen Produktqualität
Einführung einer neuartigen Produktionsmethode
Erschließung eines neuen Absatzmarktes
Eroberung einer neuen Rohstoffquelle

In der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion besteht Konsens, dass Innovation stets etwas "Neues" bezeichnet. Dies können Produkte, Dienstleistungen, Verfahren oder Prozesse sein, die sich deutlich von bisherigen Leistungsmerkmalen unterscheiden.

Der Verdrängungswettbewerb wird dabei durch innovative Unternehmen geprägt. Hauschildt systematisiert die verschiedenen Definitionen des Innovationsbegriffs nach folgenden Ansatzpunkten:

Hauschildt betont dabei, dass die Neuartigkeit einer Innovation bewusst wahrgenommen werden muss. Das bloße Hervorbringen einer Idee reicht nicht aus; Verkauf oder Nutzung sind entscheidende Faktoren.
