Day 7 of the 2025 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Broad Scarlet is a very rare visitor to the UK from France, but last year they bred here for the first time at one site in #Hampshire. Maybe they'll settle? Photo from mid-July.

A dragonfly sits on a rush stem. Its abdomen is bright red and quite wide/ Its eyes and thorax are reddish brown/ It has yellow patches at the base of its otherwise-clear wings (there are several common species that also have yellow patches on the wings - the broad and flat abdomen and lack of stripes on the thorax are the features to look for to identify this).

Day 6 of the 2025 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Southern Damselfly is very rare in the UK and is a protected species. This one was in its stronghold in the #NewForest, in early July. Also found in South Wales if you know where to look. Details of its markings distinguish it from the very common Azure Damselfly. #Hampshire #DragonflyAdventCalendar #invertebrates #ukwildlife #wildlife #insects #invertebrates #wildlifephotography #photography

A small blue damselfly, needle-shaped, sits on the edge of a leaf of a bush. It has black areas on its thorax and abdomen. The distinctive marking is on the abdomen, just behind the thorax, where there's a complex marking in the place where the commoner Azure Damselfly has a simple u-shape.

It turns out it was all a waste of paper and a waste of my time taking part in the consultation. The council now say regarding the Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council Cycling Strategy: "Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, as a district local authority, has no responsibility for cycling strategy and, therefore, does not hold the information requested."

A man standing waist deep in water holding onto a fishing rod with his left hand and pointing with the right. He is wearing brown tweed coat, blue tie, grey trousers, suspenders that are connected to what looks like an old style chest bag on one side of him over his shoulder, while another similar looking object hangs from opposite leg around waist level but partially submerged in water due to depth he has achieved standing there.

A brick bridge with two archways is reflected above the man and appears as if it's floating across a body of still dark blue-green colored water. The sky seems greyish indicating possibly late afternoon or early evening light on this overcast day, which gives off an overall calm atmosphere here in England during June 1959 according to caption provided for context.

Given that he is wearing waders (footwear and clothing worn by anglers while fishing), it indicates traditional angling practices where the fisherman submerges himself into water up until his chest level - presumably waiting or looking out, readying line on end of rod which might be cast further away. He appears to have a net in hand but not extending past waist height at this precise moment captured within photo frame; implying he may either already caught something that's inside it and is now holding onto fishing pole from far distance hoping for another fish or maybe just enjoying tranquility after perhaps spending significant ti [...]

#Basingstoke Borough Council's 2016 Cycling Strategy had a target to double cycle trips to work over 10 years. I should probably contact them to ask how that's going given that between it and the subsequent LCWIP, nothing really has changed in terms of producing joined-up high quality cycling infrastructure.

Was King William II's death while hunting in the New Forest, #Hampshire, an accident, murder - or was it a pre-Christian god-king human sacrifice made to ensure fertility to the land and future prosperity to the people, as has been suggested? (But by whom I've forgotten - Murray?). #WyrdWednesday

An illustration or woodcut showing a man collapsing against a tree in a forest with an arrow protruding from his chest. In the background we can see a stag heading out of frame to the left and the small figure of a bowman who may have been aiming for the deer - or not.

*3 grams* is a fuckton of #cocaine for a 16 year old lad to have bought, and not cheap either.

Can't help that feel that although the dealer has been nicked, pleaded guilty (hence the relatively low sentence) and society thus assumes "justice has been done" there is a much wider #safeguarding issue here which is being overlooked.

It seems unlikely the lad was going to consume all 3 grams himself and coke is rarely the sort of stuff you do in your bedroom in the family home (it would be boring, and the paranoia unbearable) - was he also dealing to his mates or part of a wider circle of friends who are already heavy drug users in their teens (just like what I regularly saw in SE England and East Anglia about 20 years ago?)
