Left- or mixed-handed? New research links non-right-handedness to early-onset neurological disorders like autism and dyslexia.

I hurt my hand on Sunday and now working with my left hand. Not withstanding I'm not used to using my left hand for everything, more things than I thought are designed for right hand use only...

Mildly interesting: most physical devices that have handedness assume you'll be using them with your right hand. Handheld radios and walkie-talkies assume the opposite.

@DavidM_yeg @futurebird

I started playing the violin after retirement. As a lefty, I struggled for a long time to maintain the correct bow hold while keeping a relaxed wrist. Then one day I happened to pick up the bow with my left hand, and automatically held it correctly, even though I had never done it before. Somehow the skill transferred between hands....

… because I had unknowingly made a very obvious error in my logic about the cause of my elder's hand problems.

See, if I get too fatigued when hand sawing something, I simply switch hands and use the other to saw. Lots of us #Lefties can do that and never think twice about it.

But my elder was right-handed, as as is common for such folk, staunchly so. There would be no hand-switching for tools, yet both hands were equally as damaged.

Do any #sports have this kind of ambidextrous standard today? From the 1923 Women's Olympiad:

"Each athlete in the shot put and javelin throw events threw using their right hand, then their left. Their final mark was the total of the best mark with their right-handed throw and the best mark with their left-handed throw."

Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was brewing, not alone for himself, but for every tide-water dog, strong of muscle and with warm, long hair, from Puget Sound to San Diego. Because men, groping in the Arctic darkness, had found a yellow metal, and because steamship and transportation companies were booming the find, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted dogs, and the dogs they wanted were heavy dogs, with strong muscles by which to toil, and furry coats to protect them from the frost.
Buck lived at a big house in the sun-kissed Santa Clara Valley. Judge Miller’s place, it was called. It stood back from the road, half hidden among the trees, through which glimpses could be caught of the wide cool veranda that ran around its four sides. The house was approached by gravelled driveways which wound about through wide-spreading lawns and under the interlacing boughs of tall poplars. At the rear things were on even a more spacious scale than at the front. There were great stables, where a dozen grooms and boys held forth, rows of vine-clad servants’ cottages, an endless and orderly array of outhouses, long grape arbors, green pastures, orchards, and berry patches. Then there was the pumping plant for the artesian well, and the big cement tank where Judge Miller’s boys took their morning plunge and kept cool in the hot afternoon.

A small rant about zombie ideas and the tendency to keep looking for modifications of study methods to avoid concluding that a null result is really null. deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/03/

I haven't quite mastered threads on Mastodon, so will link to a Twitter thread - just for anyone interested in lateralisation of language and motor skills

Student Jack Grant developed some neat ways of assessing lateralisation of motor sequencing online using computer keyboard.

I often hear right-handed people insist that left-handed people are smarter, and this view shows up in the popular press quite frequently, too. But I've always wondered whether left-handers believe the same thing. Any left-handers willing to weigh in? Is there research on this? (A 2018 meta-analysis concluded there's no difference.) #ConfirmationBias #handedness #LeftHanded #RightHanded

"Human right-handedness represents an unparalleled extreme among anthropoids and taxa displaying population-level handedness are rare. Species-level direction of manual #lateralization was largely uniform among non-human primates and did not strongly correlate with any of the selected biological predictors, nor with #phylogeny"

@biorxivpreprint in this study, we explore #handedness -related difference in #CorpusCallosum morphology in #HCP data. As follow-up of a recent ("negative") meta-analysis we systematically explore some remaining questions such as the effect of various definitions of handedness. In short: handedness differences are likely negligible. Thus, the frequent notion that mixed- or left-handers have stronger interhemispheric connectivity, might be just one of these 1970/80s #HandednessMyths .

@BenCKinney I both think it's really cool that #handedness is something you listed and absolutely had a moment of "nerd (affectionate)" when I read it. Yes, I realize you are a neuroscientist.
