5 years ago today, #HankAaron, American #BaseballHallofFame right fielder (#MLB record 755 HRs; NL MVP 1957; 25 × MLB All-Star; Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers), died at 86.
#RIP ✟
Amazing tribute to #HankAaron at the All Star Game in #Atlanta. It focused on my all-time favorite #baseball moment, when he surpassed Babe Ruth's career #homerun record. Henry Aaron, or Hammerin' Hank, finished the 1973 season one short of the record, got many race-based death threats in the off-season, and hit magic number 715 in 1974. He was briefly in the Negro American League, played 23 seasons in the majors, and passed away in 2021.

Meanwhile, not a good look for #MLB. They edited the statement below out of Vin Scully's original call when #HankAaron broke the HR record.
Craig Calcaterra: "...when you omit 'A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol' from Scully's call you completely alter what he was describing as 'marvelous.' Scully was NOT just broadly marveling. He was marveling at a very specific, very important thing." #baseball #ASG #vinscully

4/8/1974 - Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth's Home Run Record in Atlanta. #715 off Dodger's pitcher Al Downing breaking the record set by Babe Ruth back in 1935. It was one of the biggest sports stories of the century.
"He did everything well for longer than anyone who ever played this game." ~ Joe Posnanski

Sometimes I imagine my younger self coming to work with me, looking at everything we’ve created together. I can see him smiling so big, and it fills me with joy.

5yrs ago I spoke to the legend Hank Aaron. This man has a place in American History not for his accomplishments but for what they meant outside of baseball. “Do the very best that you can, at ALL TIMES.” @Braves@sportsbots.xyz #hankaaron
At 9:07pm East US on Apr 8, 1974— Henry Aaron hit HR 715 breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record.
My dad saved the newspapers from when Hank Aaron tied then beat Babe Ruth's home run record. I found them after he died and I was going through the ton of ephemera he kept.
I thought of maybe trying to sell them but I'm not sure what the market is for old newspapers, and as a Braves fan (mostly in the 90s) myself I find myself dragging my feet over finding out. Anyway, it's nice to look at and share them on anniversaries.
Something else that happened today — actually, 50 years ago today: Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's home run record. It wasn't easy.
Wonderful interview with Al Downing, who threw that pitch while playing for the #Dodgers: https://www.npr.org/2024/04/08/1243366146/50-years-later-hank-aarons-famous-hit-that-broke-babe-ruths-record
Of course, it was not an easy journey for Mr. Aaron: "Hank Aaron rose above racist hate mail and threats in pursuit of Ruth’s home run record" https://apnews.com/article/hank-aaron-715-home-run-anniversary-braves-5edfe2a0d0f3f9a19cc6e57f9762050d

Today is the 50th anniversary of the day baseball player Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record. Here's a @Flipboard Storyboard to honor the occasion. In the words of announcer Vin Scully: "What a marvelous moment for baseball. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia. What a marvelous moment for the country and the world. A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol.”
