🕺 #thunder #hardrock #Blues #NowPlaying

ZEKE – Peterbilt 7″ (Hound Gawd! Records)

There are few bands in the history of aggressive music who can lay claim to having invented their own genre with such unrelenting efficiency as ZEKE. Since their emergence from the streets of Seattle, they have defined speed as a core philosophy. With the release of their new 7-inch, Peterbilt, the legends are definitely, gloriously back, reminding every pretender to the throne what “high-octane” truly means. This is a velocity you submit to, a concentrated burst of power that packs more relentless energy into its limited runtime than most bands manage across an entire double LP. If you’re looking for subtlety, complex dynamics, or a gentle fade-in, you’ve picked up the wrong slab of vinyl. Peterbilt is a frontal assault. Its style is best described as the unholy trinity of hardcore punk’s uncompromising fury, the metallic chug of classic rock ‘n’ roll, and a devastating chemical boost that puts the entire package firmly in Motorhead-on-steroids territory. It’s an exercise in purity and power, a relentless commitment to the shortest distance between two points, executed at the fastest possible speed. The entire experience is a blistering proof that rock and roll, when done right, should feel dangerous and slightly out of control.

The foundation of this controlled chaos lies squarely in the rhythm section, which acts as a maniacal engine room. The drumming is absolutely essential to the ZEKE signature sound, an unending barrage of furious snare hits, crushing toms, and pedal work that seems to defy the limits of human endurance. The percussion provides the constant, accelerating pulse, the feeling of being perpetually on the red line. It’s all about the dynamic, punchy attack that makes every beat hit like a direct punch in the face. Donny Paycheck is the key to maintaining this unsustainable pace, executing every fill and break with a tremendous precision that keeps the music from dissolving into noise, yet always keeps it right on the edge of collapse. Often, in music this fast and loud, the bass is relegated to a blurry background hum, but here, the basslines are firmly in-your-face. They possess a thick, rumbling density that gives the overall mix its heavy, grinding weight, the true kinship with the classic ZEKE sound. These basslines are a driving melodic element, constantly moving and threading underneath the guitar assault, providing a necessary warmth and groove that makes the entire delivery rock ‘n’ roll, rather than just plain old hardcore punk. The bass is the uncompromising ballast, adding power, weight, and a beautiful layer of aggressive fuzz that defines the low end.

These riffs are not sprawling, complicated passages, but instantly iconic, lean, and mean constructions designed for maximum impact. They are tight, focused, and cut directly to the core, blending the punchy, short bursts of hardcore punk with the swagger and crunch of classic, denim-and-leather rock. The consistency of this attack makes ZEKE sound so devastating. There is simply no downtime, no moment where the rhythmic pressure is released. This relentless riffing assault is only momentarily broken by the magnificent soloing. When the solos hit, they are like sudden blasts of fury cutting through the dense, smoky atmosphere. These are not smooth, blues-based passages, but more like a frantic, noisy, and delivered with a wild, almost maniacal intensity that perfectly mirrors the drumming. These sonic maneuvers are more than a rock-solid proof that even within this disciplined, high-velocity framework, there is room for dynamic, expressive guitar fireworks that stand out, not for their cleanliness, but for their sheer aggression and attitude.

Finally, the entire experience is channeled through the utterly fierce vocals of Blind Marky Felchtone. His voice is the unfiltered manifestation of ZEKE’s raw, direct, and powerful ethos. He delivers every line with a feral snarl, an aggressive command that refuses to be overlooked. It’s a primal howl that cuts through the instrumental speed, lending the music its crucial human element of rage and defiance. These vocals are uncompromising, perfectly capturing the attitude and swagger of high-speed rock ‘n’ roll while keeping the raw, desperate edge of hardcore punk. They are the final, essential layer of aggression that completes the frontal assault. Peterbilt is a perfect encapsulation of what makes ZEKE legendary. It’s a distilled dose of their explosive live energy, delivered straight to vinyl with zero compromise. It is a short, fast, loud, defining statement for anyone who craves speed, aggression, and the pure, uncontrolled attitude of rock ‘n’ roll pushed beyond the limit. Head to Hound Gawd! Records for more information about ordering this gem on vinyl.
