Haverfordwest underpass transformed with vibrant mural

Led by Youth Worker Ell Lewis and supported by a Youth Bank Grant, GD Harries & Sons and funds raised through raffles, cake sales, and bingo events at their school, the group collaborated with local businesses and the community to bring their vision to life.

The result is a stunning public artwork that not only adds a splash of colour to the town but also represents Haverfordwest heritage and the voices, experiences and pride of Haverfordwest’s young people.

“This project is our legacy,” said one participant. “We’ve created something lasting that represents who we are and where we come from, it’s pretty amazing what a cup of tea and a conversation can result in.”

To bring their vision to life, the group collaborated with professional graffiti artist Lloyd, who led workshops involving young people, local businesses and community groups.

“This has been a project I’ve loved being part of from start to finish; the young people involved are a credit to the town and were great to work with,” explained Lloyd. “To not only come up with the idea, but to raise the funds and then take part in the painting as well, I was seriously impressed. Too often people are keen to talk down Haverfordwest, but these young people are certainly bucking the trend. Ardderchog pawb!”

“This mural is more than just art – it’s a statement,” said Ell Lewis, Youth Worker at HHVCS. “It reflects the young people’s connection to their community, their appreciation for Youth Work, and the impact youth services have on their lives.”

Incorporated into the design is personal elements significant to the artists, including a visual tribute to the daily check-in system used in their Youth Work sessions highlighting the essential role of emotional support and connection in their development. “This is exactly what we need to see on our way to school in the morning” one participant shared. “It’s put a smile on our faces, and this is important for our wellbeing”.

Passersby have praised the mural, with many commenting on how it has transformed an overlooked area into a bright and inspiring space; “We hope this is just the start,” one resident commented. “The group has poured colour into their community. It would be great to see the project continue down the rest of the tunnels.”

Heidi Lewis from County Sports remarked: “The project is really beneficial for the town and I love how inclusive it is. It is great to see the young people taking ownership and it has equipped the participants with valuable skills in planning, design, teamwork, and community engagement. It is inspiring”

One participant said “my friends and I got to take part in the workshop because we go to The Edge Youth Centre, the centre is really important to us and I really enjoyed being able to take part. I’ve shown it to all my family!”

The group would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the local independent businesses and community members who supported the project through donations and collaborative efforts. Their contributions have helped turn a vision into a meaningful and lasting piece of community art.

Four hospitals to install defibrillators that the public can use

Hywel Dda University Health Board have announced that members of the public now have access to four new defibrillators on each of its main hospital sites.

These are at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen at the main entrance by the hospital sign, Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli by the bus stop at the entrance to the hospital, Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth by the pharmacy entrance and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest at the roundabout on the main entrance.

The health board says this has been made possible by collaboration between the health board and Save a Life Cymru to install public access defibrillators for use in the community.

(Images: Hywel Dda University Health Board)

It added that for every minute that CPR and defibrillation is not commenced the chance of survival decreases by 10%. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation can significantly increase survival.

Save a Life Cymru provided the four defibrillators at no cost to the health board. The defibrillators are housed in heated cabinets and will be checked regularly by volunteer ‘guardians’. Each public access defibrillator is registered with the National Defibrillator Network (The Circuit) and this means that should they be needed, the 999 ambulance call taker will be able to direct someone to them.

The defibrillators are said to be really easy to use and offer voice prompts. In the event of a cardiac arrest, members of the public will need to call 999. They will be advised where the nearest defibrillator is located and to follow the instructions provided (visual, phone, defibrillator) while performing CPR and providing defibrillation. Never stop CPR, always send someone else to fetch the defibrillator for you.

Professor Len Nokes, Chair of Save a Life Cymru said: “We are delighted to have provided new public access defibrillators at four key locations on the Hywel Dda estate. This gives the surrounding communities and visitors to these sites 24/7 access to lifesaving defibrillators. We know that for every minute someone’s in cardiac arrest without receiving CPR and having a defibrillator used on them, their chance of survival decreases by 10%.

“Marc Gower, our Save a Life Cymru’s Community Co-ordinator in west Wales, will be supporting the defibrillator guardians to make sure defibrillators continue to be registered on The Circuit so that their locations are made available to the Welsh Ambulance Service.  This will ensure that the 999 call takers can direct a bystander to a registered defibrillator and help save more lives.”

Dr Eiry Edmunds, Interim Deputy Medical Director for Acute for the health board said: “I am proud of our collaboration with Save a Life Cymru to ensure public access defibrillators are available at our hospital sites. This collaboration provides potentially lifesaving equipment for our communities.”

Mark Henwood, Executive Medical Director at the health board, said: “I am very pleased to hear that we are the second health board in Wales to engage with Save a Life Cymru to provide public access defibrillators. This will be a great development for the health of our communities and will save lives. I wish to personally thank Save a Life Cymru, all those individuals who have donated and also the volunteer guardians.”

Aberavon Paddleboard company owner jailed for 10 years after deaths of four in River Cleddau incident

Nerys Lloyd, 39, from Aberavon, who was the owner and sole director of Salty Dog Co Ltd, was charged with the gross negligence manslaughter of Paul O’Dwyer, 42, Andrea Powell, 41, Morgan Rogers, 24, and Nicola Wheatley, 40, following their tragic deaths following the incident in Haverfordwest Town Weir on 30 October 2021.

She admitted all four charges on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, along with one count under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

At her sentencing, the court heard how on 30 October 2021, Lloyd with the assistance of Paul O’Dwyer planned a trip organised through Lloyd’s business.

However, there had been heavy flooding, and severe weather warnings were in place, which were not heeded by Lloyd. The river was running fast, and the weir was in an extremely hazardous condition.  Lloyd did not check the weir or provide a safety briefing to the participants nor inform them of the presence of the weir.  Despite this, Lloyd facilitated the paddleboarders entering the water and she led the group along the river.

As the group approached the weir, apart from Lloyd, all the participants were pulled over the top into its base and became trapped before being ejected from the weir.  Four of the participants survived.

Instructor Mr O’Dwyer, who initially exited the river safely, re-entered the water in an attempt to rescue the others, but was immediately dragged over the top. The four victims died as a result of drowning/immersion.

A joint investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police and HSE found that Lloyd was not correctly qualified to lead a stand-up paddle board river tour.

Guidance and training for water sports instructors and participants is available from national sport governing bodies including the British Stand-Up Paddle Association, British Canoeing and the British Kite Surfing Association.  Anyone organising adventure activities for under-18s must be licenced by the Adventure Activities Licencing Authority.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Cameron Ritchie, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “Firstly, I would like to reiterate my heartfelt sympathies to the families of Paul, Andrea, Morgan and Nicola.

“We have heard harrowing testimony from the victims and survivors during this hearing of the continuing impact this incident had on them.  I sincerely hope that the conclusion of these proceedings helps to clear the way for them to be able to start the healing process.

The incident that took place in Haverfordwest on October 30, 2021, was an extremely tragic case resulting in the completely avoidable deaths of four people. We heard in court how this incident devastated four families, and we hope that lessons will be learned that prevent this from ever happening again.

This has been a complex and extensive investigation and I’d like to thank my colleagues at Dyfed-Powys Police, The Health and Safety Executive and the Crown Prosecution Service for their professionalism and diligence to secure this outcome.”

HSE Inspector Helen Turner said: “I would like to express our sincere sympathy to the families of those who died, and to the survivors whose lives are indelibly affected.

“Four lives were needlessly lost and survivors traumatised by their experience at Haverfordwest weir.

“Nerys Lloyd was solely responsible for the decision to enter the water while the river was in flood, and for the attempt to take even inexperienced paddlers over the weir. This was completely reckless and the risk of death was foreseeable.

“The victims placed their trust in Lloyd to deliver a safe and enjoyable paddle, but through her incompetence, carelessness and complacency she failed to plan or assess the obvious risk at the weir or to take even basic safety measures.  By not discussing the hazards on the route Lloyd robbed the participants of the opportunity to make a reasoned decision on their own participation on the day.

“Health and safety law is not a barrier to adventurous activities, which are enjoyed by people every day in safety. Organisers must take proportionate action to recognise and manage real risks.”

Lisa Rose, Specialist Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime Division, said: “Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the victims, and with all those affected by this awful tragedy.

“Nerys Lloyd should not have taken participants on the water that day; the heavy flooding had left the river running very fast and it was beyond the remit of a beginner’s tour.

“The weir itself was in an extremely hazardous condition, with a high potential for loss of life, and all the possible exit points nearby had been flooded out.

“Lloyd was not qualified to take inexperienced paddleboarders out in such conditions, and her actions fell very far below the standard expected of a paddleboard instructor and activity planner.

“The tour could have started at a different point, to avoid the weir, or been cancelled altogether but Lloyd made the final decision to go-ahead with the event.

“There are no words than can articulate the devastation this tragedy has caused, and I can only hope that this sentence provides a sense of justice for those affected.”

Paddleboard company owner admits manslaughter of four in River Cleddau incident

Nerys Lloyd, 39, a former police officer from Port Talbot was the owner and sole director of paddleboard tour company, Salty Dog Co Ltd.

She has today pleaded guilty to the gross negligence manslaughter of Paul O’Dwyer, 42, Andrea Powell, 41, Morgan Rogers, 24, and Nicola Wheatley, 40, following their deaths in Haverfordwest Town Weir on 30 October 2021.

Lloyd also pleaded guilty to a Health and Safety at Work Act offence at Swansea Crown Court today.

The four victims were part of a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) paddleboarding tour – organised by Salty Dog Co Ltd – and Lloyd was present as an instructor on the day of the tragedy alongside fellow instructor Mr O’Dwyer, who was killed.

On 30 October 2021, there had been heavy flooding and severe weather warnings were in place. The river was running fast, and the weir was in an extremely hazardous condition.

As the group approached the weir, the three participants were pulled over the top into its base and became trapped.

Instructor Mr O’Dwyer, who initially exited the river safely, re-entered the water in an attempt to rescue the others but was immediately dragged over the top. The four victims died as a result of drowning/immersion.

An expert concluded that the tour should not have taken place while encompassing the weir and that Lloyd did not have a suitable qualification, and her planning and supervision was inadequate.

The prosecution followed a joint investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Lisa Rose, Specialist Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime Division, said: “This was an avoidable tragedy. Despite going to check the state of the river before departing on the tour, Nerys Lloyd failed to inspect the weir.

“The majority of participants had limited experience, and Lloyd was not qualified to take paddleboarders out in such hazardous conditions.

“There was no safety briefing or formal risk assessments, and the participants were not advised that they would be traversing a weir or instructed on options to get out of the water.

“Final decisions to continue with the event were Lloyd’s decision, and as a result she held complete and entire responsibility.

“I hope these convictions provide some sense of justice for those affected and our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the victims at this time.”

Pembrokeshire children preparing for popular parade celebrating Patron Saint

Organised by the Pembrokeshire Language Forum and Pembrokeshire County Council, the annual parade will set off at 10am for a celebratory procession through the town.

Led by the energetic Samba Doc, the parade starts from the car park behind the former county library building on Dew Street.

The children come down High Street, through Bridge Street, across the Old Bridge, back along Quay Street, and finally arrive at Picton Playing Fields, for an open-air jamboree.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity for children to come together in a vibrant celebration of Welsh pride, language, music, and community spirit,” said Catrin Phillips, Welsh Language Development Officer for Pembrokeshire County Council.

In addition to the parade, local businesses are invited to take part in a shop window competition, celebrating all things Welsh. “The best Wales and Welsh-inspired display will be awarded a special dragon trophy,” said Rhidian Evans, Chief Officer for Menter Iaith Sir Benfro.

The public is warmly encouraged to come along and cheer on the parade, bringing banners, flags, and costumes to add to the festive atmosphere.

“We’d love to see as many people as possible lining the streets to celebrate Wales, our language, and our culture,” said Cllr Guy Woodham, Pembrokeshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language.
