#Hematite is also found on the island of Montreal -here associated with alkali-rich mafic magma intruding into limestone. The Francon quarry was primarily a source of building stone.

The small hematite spheres are on the end of the columns of clear dawsonite.

Over two billion tonnes of iron ore have been mined from the Labrador Trough of Quebec and Labrador over the last 70 years. The paleo-Proterozoic sediments have been variably metamorphosed (you can see the bend in the southern part of the belt caused by the younger Grenville orogeny). Much of the direct shipping ore is dominated by the mineral #Hematite.

It’s my son’s favourite mineral. It also gets a geobiological vote, as banded iron formations may have been produced by metabolising microbes over many millions of years, beginning billions of years ago.

Haüyne, formed in magma chambers, is pretty, blue & can fluoresce. But electrically conductive iron-ore hematite is an absolute giant of art history, used as red ochre, going back at least 164,000 years to Pinnacle Point Caves! Also called Venetian, mars or English red.

A. K. Wheelock gives the following description of this painting on the website of the National Gallery of Art in Washington (1):
“Rembrandt painted, drew, and etched so many self-portraits in his lifetime that changes in his appearance invite us to gauge his moods by comparing one image to another. Such a biographical reading is encouraged by the way in which the artist confronts the viewer directly. Rembrandt painted this self-portrait in 1659, after he had suffered financial failure despite so many years of success.”
“The light that so effectively illuminates the head also accents Rembrandt’s left shoulder and, to a lesser extent, his broadly executed clasped hands. Rembrandt’s pose was inspired by Raphael’s famous portrait of Balthasar Castiglione, which had appeared in an auction in Amsterdam in 1639. Titian’s depiction of the dramatic story of Actaeon who surprised the goddess Diana at her bath in the forest. Diana was furious at this intrusion into her privacy and transformed him into a stag which was then killed by his own dogs. This is one of the series of ‘poesie’ paintings with mythological subjects painted for King Philip II of Spain. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, they are among Titian’s most admired works.
Titian employed an extensively wide palette of nearly all pigments known in the Renaissance such as carmine cochineal, vermilion, red lead, natural ultramarine, smalt, verdigris, ochres, and lead-tin yellow, possibly even orpiment, and realgar.” This includes hematite used as a pigment.
