#HerbstluftWM

So still on my #OpenBSD adventure and although I missed images in the terminal be it sixel in xterm or the kitty protocol in kitty, I've decided to stick with good old #Xterm . Also on my #FreeBSD daily driver I'm used to such luxuries as icons in the terminal like font awesome or nerd fonts but even though I could have used alacritty or kitty to achieve this I have decided to for go them. After all what do they do other make it look pretty ? I don't get any other functionality from them and they can easily be replaced with text. You might have noticed too that although I'm a #Wayland chic on my #ThinkPad I've decided to be all nostalgic and stick with Xorg on OpenBSD. I haven't yet settled on a window manager be it tiling or stacking but #HerbstluftWM and #Openbox are in my sights although I'm still using the default #Fvwm right now. I have my Qutebrowser setup and aerc for my email. Printing via cups and xsane for scanning. Looking into nsxiv for an image viewer as the OpenBSD port of imv is well out of date. Yes I'm having to make small changes but once I'm finished this wee Dell Optiplex 3080 tower will be perfect for daily driving OpenBSD and I'm looking forward to learning lots more. #RunBSD

Been tinkering around with my #OpenBSD Dell Optiplex 3080 rig learning how OpenBSD differs from say FreeBSD. I've also got X running with the default #FVWM but I cannot decide if I want to install #HerbstluftWM or #OpenBox ? Yes I know the first is a tiling window manager but I know I can setup OpenBox to tile too with a few scripts. I think I'll have to research a tad more and decide later. For now FVWM it is and yes I'm actually liking OpenBSD if I'm honest. #RunBSD #Nostalgia

Still setting up my #FreeBSD #Xorg Desktop PC and I've got #Xterm just how I like it for now with my favourite theme gruvbox. Strangely enough I'm still running the default #Twm as I haven't yet installed a tiling wm like #Herbstluftwm . This feels like the late 80's earlier 90's and I'm having fun learning new stuff even though I used to use Xorg for years before #Wayland . I mean I never ever thought I'd like Xterm but it's way more lightweight and powerfull than I ever gave it credit for.

#TIL about a window manager called #Herbstluftwm. (thanks, j!)

Herbstluftwm. it's german for "find your meta key", i believe.
edited to whack wayland hashtag

Ok so I've got #OpenBSD running and installed #Herbstluftwm plus #Qutebrowser and I even have sound. Not bad at all for a first go on this Dell Optiplex 3080 Tower I5 with UHD630 and 32Gb ram plus a 1Tb NVME. It does seems strange being back in the world of Xorg though.

Well that's #NetBSD successfully installed on this Dell Optiplex 3080 tower. Now to read the docs and explore before installing #herbstluftwm

If I did give #OpenBSD a shot and obviously went with the flow using an X based WM then I do like the look of #HerbstluftWM as it seems very scriptable too. 🤔

@justine #Herbstluftwm will always have a special place in my heart and remains my favorite x11 window manager. I wish there was a Wayland version.

Why am I reading from the #Herbstluftwm website ? I really like my #Wayland setup with #RiverWM and why would I even want to use #X11 again ??

@lhp That's really cool! Currently I control via my own terribly organized wrapper scripts but would love a scheme-based alternative to . Any plans for tiling support?

@myself
for me for now #herbstluftwm until there's a proper equivalent for wayland
for you, uhm go with i3, has the best documentation, dwm isn't as ressource saving as you think if you have to recompile it everytime you need to switch configuration
hyprland is nice to tinker arround with but not for production or daily driver. why not all?

Today is a great day to be stretching up the boundaries a bit. AutumnSky Saigon ( herbstluftwm on Universal blue) is moving over to the mini pc 🖥️ Making way for JTown (Slackware with KDE Plasma 6) on the laptop 👻 💻 Couldn't be doing this without all those great contributors, who lay the foundation for me to start chipping away at 👃🏻

Who says atomic ain't flexible? Herbstluftwm is one of those window managers I haven't tried out yet. So, started building on Ublue's Vauxite (an Xfce image that even Fedora doesn't have yet) and baked in Herbstluftwm (and Polybar, Alacritty etc.) into Vauxite-Saigon, with the BlueBuild toolkit. A Sunday very well spend!

@BrodieOnLinux what do you do when your favorite WMs aren't available on wayland. #herbstluftwm specifically, but also #xmonad

2024-02-15

Well, apart from #Sway it seems, there is nothing stable out there for #Wayland in terms of simple window managers.

So, it's easy to say "X11 must die" when you are using KDE or GNOME or i3, because you don't have to adapt to a new environment.

But if you are a long-term user of other window managers the switch isn't so easy.

What are users of #icewm #fluxbox #openbox #bspwm #herbstluftwm #fvwm #jwm and many others are supposed to do?

@rwdf nice choice :). I use this combination and freedom since some years. Why did you choose #herbstluftwm ?

2023-10-16

After having been away from #Linux for a long while, I have spent the last couple of afternoons setting up an old (new to me) #ThinkPad X1 Carbon with #ArchLinux and #HerbstluftWM. A whole lot of config and customization. Love it!

Maybe I'll actually use the machine for its intended purpose sometime too, but that's not important right now ...
