Posting tiny snakes because I really am so happy to have found them - was raking leaves at a community food distribution center and helped these little guys too. #herping #snakes #dangernoodles #lilguys 💖

Found this large bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer) hanging out near the creek in Lafayette, CO while cycling the other day. First bullsnake of the year! Came within a couple of inches of getting squished by a guy on a bike riding along in front of me, so I gently encouraged it to move off the path. #reptiles #snakes #herping #wildlife l

While gardening yesterday I disturbed this guy, possibly a broad-head skink, definitely Plestiodon. Whatever the species it's the fattest one I've seen.

profile view of a skink. itw scales are relatively smooth and mostly uniform brownish gray. around its throat, mouth, and cheeks it is a slightly orangeish red. kind of like it's blushing

🌿 Meet the Antimena chameleon, a master of camouflage in the dry, spiny forests of southwest Madagascar! 🇲🇬✨ This striking male was spotted in a Baobab forest near Toliara. While males can reach up to 34 cm (13"), females are nearly half that size at 17 cm (6.7"). A true gem of Madagascar’s unique wildlife!

I finally encountered some live Ambystoma gracile (northwestern salamander) yesterday! They were out in force around a local lake, now that the temperatures have stayed above freezing for several nights in a row. Beautiful animals.

A slick, glossy salamander with a wide face and round eyes, with a brown dorsal side and a pale underside, stands in a cluster of leaf litter, head up as it looks slightly off from the camera.

Animal Spotlight: Ouachita Dusky Salamander, Desmognathus brimleyorum
One of the westernmost species in its genus, the Ouachita Dusky is endemic to the mountains and adjacent plains from where it gets its name, in southeast Oklahoma and southern Arkansas. These nearly aquatic salamanders inhabit permanently moist areas where there are plenty of hiding places, such as ravine streams, forested wetlands, or springs on rocky scree slopes like where I found this singular individual I’ve been lucky to find so far. They aren’t fully aquatic, but rarely venture far beyond the rocky or wooded cover where permanent moving water is found. It is a fairly large salamander, up to 7 or so inches long, and sports a long finned tail and bullet-shaped head with bulbous eyes but otherwise is relatively indistinct, not having more than a solid brown-purple-gray color with no real pattern other than some lateral spots on young.
Like most salamanders, they are carnivores hunting down any small invertebrates or potentially even other salamanders that they come across, and are most likely to be active and encountered either on cool wet nights when they may travel to forage or breed, or when flipping rocks and debris in suitable habitat. It is important to remember though that if the latter is done, always return the habitat to the exact same structure as it was found, and if salamanders are handled, keep your hands clean, wet, and the contact period short.

Considering reptiles in biodiversity net gain (BNG) design

arc-trust.org/news/considering

Reptile populations are in decline globally, driven primarily by habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and habitat fragmentation. In England, where only six native reptile species exist, these challenges are particularly critical. Thoughtful habitat…

A couple weeks ago I ran into this cute little brownsnake, _Storeria dekayi_, when out spidering!! Less than a foot long and quite slender (the first photo was taken with my lowest-magnification macro lens).

They are not rare, but I virtually never come across snakes in my wanderings and I don't think I've ever seen one of these before. I only even knew they existed because of lurking on /r/whatsthissnake! These small harmless creatures mostly eat slugs and snails.

What a special find. I treasure the encounter. (The snake, on the other hand, was mildly annoyed and moved away.)

If you look really closely you can see the points of its tongue emerging from its mouth.Zoomed-out photo, when I first saw the snake slithering around the base of a willow tree. It's hard to tell scale from this photo, but it was under a foot long.

I went out looking for native frogs this past Saturday. I heard some, but only saw dang bullfrogs again. At least this young one was photogenic.
