#Today 26

Good day!

It snowed. IS snowing. Not a lot, but enough to cover the grass.

It’s gorgeous.

I do, though, need to travel early tomorrow morning, so I’m hoping the roads are clear enough.

Especially the canyon. After that, I’m not too worried. Life in western Montana.

Be everwell.

In a forest of Ponderosa Pine, two tree trunks stand out owing to the lichen growing on them, lichen that’s all the brighter in the dim light and light drizzle. The brown grass and gray sky serve as contrast.

August 15, 1983: As I entered Sages Ravine, I crossed the Massachusetts border. Ten states down and four to go.

We are standing on a rock outcrop at the top of a high cliff. Much of the cliff top around us is covered with greenish gold grassy plants and small green shrubs. On the right of our picture the ridge crest continues over a forested plateau with series of wooded prominences. We can just see the edge of this plateau and several ridges running down to the valley below. Most of our view is the relatively flat Housatonic Valley below us and stretching out to the low, rolling Litchfield Hills along the horizon. Both hills and valleys are mostly wooded with some green fields and pastures, especially in the valley.

Ranger Sarah looks out across the valley, amazed that those distant ridges represent the same layer in Fossil Lake before 45 million years of erosion went to work.

Ranger Sarah learns about the erosion here. Around the valley tan layers on the ridge tops where deposited by Fossil Lake and are at the same level Ranger Sarah is now at. Then the Wasatch Formation deposited the red rock on top. 45 million years of erosion gives us the land we see today.

#Today 25

Good day!

Yesterday, I went to Pattee Canyon, climbed high on Mount Sentinel, descended Crazy Canyon, & crossed some vast, open slopes for the views while it snowed in the mountains.

9.2 miles, 14.8K.

I spent the rest of the day writing the narrative outline. Bliss!

Be everwell.

A view looking across a meadow of golden grass, bare brush, and a few new growth pines at a dense pine forest. Rising behind is a wooded mountain where snow is falling, the sky gray.

I don't usually take photos of mushrooms, but these ones are showstoppers with their candy apple red colour.

Three mushrooms poking out of brown leaf litter on the forest floor. Only the one on the left is fully visible. It has an inverted cap that is shiny candy apple red with white fluted edges. It is the most amazing mushroom I have ever seen in the wild, found this morning on our hike in PKOLS (Mt. Douglas Park).

Ranger Sarah looks up at the historic quarry. When Animals and plants died here and sank to the lake bottom they were quickly covered by a microbial mat and layers of limestone sediment, which prevented decomposition and scavenging.
