I just saw the shutdown notice for K&T Host. I am sad to see them go, but thankful for the services they provided. Hosting apps like Lemmy and Mitra through them hugely boosted my spirit in becoming a hobbyist sysadmin. Thank you, K&T Host, and happy retirement! I hope everyone manages to move their data before the February 1, 2026, full shutdown.

🐒 Breaking news: Someone wrote a "high-performance" full-text search engine in Go! πŸš€ Because clearly, Google needed another competitor, and the world was desperate for more search engines built from scratch by hobbyists. πŸ™„

@kd8bxp If you get a chance, please snap a picture of the projects table so we can see what people are working on. (Used to hold these monthly at work and had a lot of fun meeting new people and seeing what they were excited about building and sharing.) Thanks & 73

My #glibc bug report turned out to be pretty successful! Not only glibc got a fix, but also a #GCC bug fix was made; all this happened within a week.

Don't hesitate to report a bug when you see one.

Instead of spending my last day off gaming, I've spent a lot of it rearranging things on my website :ablobfoxdundundunowo:

Now there's random Star Trek quotes on the left sidebar, along with fediverse trending hashtags (pulled from mastodon.online), and I removed the "notes" from the front page again because I just don't use them lol

🚨 Breaking News: "Tiny kernel" enthusiast spends countless hours reinventing the wheel, only to discover it's still round and doesn't quite fit the car. πŸš—πŸ”§ Meanwhile, applauds politely while silently wondering if AI could have written a better hobby project in its sleep. πŸ€–πŸ’€

πŸ–¨οΈβœ¨ So you bought a Prusa 3D printer and suddenly think you're an engineer? πŸ€” Welcome to the world of fine-tuning endless parameters just to watch your plastic spaghetti ooze awkwardly. πŸŽ‰ Remember, nothing says "I have no life" more than measuring belt tension for the perfect cube. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Measuring the characteristics of some cheap J113 / 2SJ113 n-channel JFETs I bought, so I can match them / divvy them into bins.

Put #15 of 20 into the JFET test circuit, and the power supply's current limiter kicks in ... whoops. Did I have it turned around so I swapped the terminals? Nope...

Take a peek at it. Slightly different marking. Still "J113", but the factory/date code is different. Put it in the component tester... it's a PNP BJT transistor, not a JFET at all, and with a pinout completely unsuitable for the JFET test circuit. If it had been in for more than a second, it probably would have let the Magic Smoke out.

Oh, #AliExpress sellers, where would #hobbyist #electronics people be without you? Somewhere with less excitement in their lives, I guess.

The difference between making a cabinet that is glued and screwed in place vs one that is built like a flatpack and assembled on site is about 300 hours πŸ₯΄β€¦ they are likely to look exactly the same!

@dragonminded I guess with #Autodesk enshittifying their toolchain with more and more expensive subscriptions did force a lot if folks to actually invest time and effort and money into #KiCad.

  • And TBH, they deserve it, because there needs to be real #competition to Autodesk's stuff even if it's just for hobbyists and small-scale projects.

And yes, I still regret not having bought #Eagle when #CadSoft offered a #NonCommercial / #Hobbyist license for €125 one-time, cuz I'd still be rickin' that today.

Had to break out of the "not-getting-past-prototyping"-state of my projects. So I joined a gamejam.

Another question for #electronics #hobbyist people from a complete noob: This box of electronic components is all presented in plastic boxes and bags, but they're all different components crammed together.

When considering storage solutions for these bits (like the box of drawers in the second picture), do I need to account for static build-up created by the plastic bits rubbing together? I mean static buildup in the box of drawers, from the drawers rubbing against the frame.

Thank you!

A snap of the inside of box of BOJACK electronic components. They're all crammed in together. One of those plastic boxes of many transparent drawers, like a 21st century version of a 19th century apothecary.
