A black and white image of a cemetery featuring several gravestones of varying sizes. In the background, there is a bare tree and a stone wall under a dramatic sky with clouds. The ground is grassy and some gravestones are leaning or partially toppled.

@sarahdalgulls

I don’t have any photos of cuddy ducks, except the pin badge one on my Red Cuthbert Morris kit (no one in meatspace has got the reference unprompted yet), but I have these two mallards on Lindisfarne from April 2021.

An Anglo-Saxon name stone for Osgyth which was found on Lindisfarne in Northumberland. The stone dates from the mid 7th to 8th centuries, and possibly served as a grave marker. The stone can be viewed in the Lindisfarne Priory Museum. 📸 My own.

Good morning Mastodon. Here’s a boat-turned-shed on Holy Island, Lindisfarne, Northumbria to brighten your Wednesday morning.

Front on view of a wooden shed made out of a clinker-built wooden ship, cut in half and upturned with the keel towards the blue summer sky. We are looking end on at the wider end where a boarded wall closes off the cut half to make a shed, with a recycled blue wooden door with flaking paint is the entrance, firmly locked with modern shiny silver steel bolts. Stands in a grassy field with bright yellow wildflowers at its base. Photo: Copyright Coralie Mills 2023

When we visit Lindisfarne (Holy Island) in Northumbria, our go-to spot for a quiet Sunday is Pilgrims Coffee. It’s the perfect place to indulge in a delicious cake and a hot cup of coffee. And guess what? The crumbs from the cake are shared with the friendly sparrows that hang out in the courtyard. It’s a delightful treat for all concerned - birds and people alike!

The image depicts an outdoor scene with a modern, single-story coffee roasting house. A well-maintained lawn and people enjoying snacks and drinks are in front of the building. A large tree provides shade, and a stone wall is visible in the background. The clear blue sky makes it a beautiful sunny day.

The magical Lindisfarne Priory on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland. Not Scotland, but close. It was founded in the 1120s on the site of a monastery established 500 years earlier. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lin

Lindisfarne Priory. The image shows a view along the ruined priory church with a ruined red stone wall on the left and remains of taller structures and a high arch slightly further into the frame. The ground is covered with grass and there are traces of columns in the foreground and on the right, with more complete ones further away. The scene is in sunlight.

In preparation for #Northumberland trip have got some recommended ‘local’ bedtime #reading… got it on eBay and was pleasantly surprised to find it was autographed 😮…shame my name isn’t Emma - should I cross ‘Emma’ out and put ‘Andy’?

A Hob is type of household spirit, so-called in parts of northern England and southern Scotland, but similar to the brownie found elsewhere, or to the tomte or nisse in Scandinavia. Mostly considered lucky, as a good hob will help with the house or farm work, they can also be mischievous nuisances and hard to get rid of. They may be survivals of the Old English cofgodas, pre-Christian household gods.

Here in the far north east of England, they're usually known as hobthrushes. My favourite hobthrush story involves none other than St Cuthbert, bishop of Lindisfarne, who was bothered by a rowdy hobthrush while trying to meditate, and was forced to use all his ingenuity to trick the creature into leaving.

Some versions put the story in Cuthbert's later years on Inner Farne, but I prefer the location below, a small island where the saint was said to retreat from the arduous demands of bishopry, and which is still known as Cuthbert's Island, or Hobthrush Island.

A view across a strip of shallow sea, interrupted by sandbanks, from Lindisfarne to the mainland coast of Northumberland, with hazy, blue-green hills and gleaming strips of yellow oil seed in flower. In the near foreground is a stone wall, covered in yellow flowers, and a grassy bank down to the shore. Between the two is Hobthrush Island, a low, grassy knoll with a grey shore of rocks and a small, wooden cross erected on it.

Summer Holiday 2024

Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a small tidal island off the northeast coast of England. It is located in Northumberland and is famous for its rich history, natural beauty, and religious significance.

Apart from all that good information it's also the home of Pilgrims Coffee, which is always our first stop when we arrive on the island. Coffee and cake is a must have.
Alas on this visit things have changed with a guy who had to be temporary serving. Coffee was hardly warm and took ages to be produced. Hoping that next year it'll be back to normal.
