#homelab #selfhosting

We installed a smart ceiling fan in the bedroom at the weekend.

The brand is “Reiga” but I think it’s just their name slapped on a mass-made fan, their website is a joke and the support email address doesn’t inspire confidence. 😅

It’s a six-speed fan but honestly I can’t imagine ever setting it above the first speed! 😳😅 Nice and quiet, really effective. The blades are plastic, painted to look like wood. I think it looks good.

It has a dimmable LED lamp, with warm and cool white settings. Super bright and doesn’t get as dim as I’d like, honestly. We have lamps around the room, I think we’ll probably use them more than the overhead light.

The smart stuff is Tuya-based, connected via WiFi. I chose that cos I already have some Tuya stuff so it was easy to add to their app and then #HomeAssistant.

I was using the “Local Tuya” custom integration (the official one uses the cloud - yuck) but it didn’t work properly, very slow to respond, couldn’t change the colour temperature. Luckily there’s also “Tuya Local” which worked perfectly (once I selected a suitable preset, none of the named fans matched).

Now I just need to setup the automations I need for the various controllers we have (IKEA buttons, smart light switch etc). I was planning to programme some speed controls but like I say, I don’t think we need them…

A photo of the fan installed on the ceiling. It has a shiny metal cowl to hide the electrical connections, and three brown blades. It looks a lot like an old aeroplane propeller. There’s a white circle rimmed with shiny metal at the bottom, which is the lamp. The instruction booklet for the fan. The support email is there at the bottom: Hongtop8 at outlook dot com.

👻 Spook just got way smarter

It now understands the powerful magic of templates in Home Assistant! 🧙‍♂️
Spook can raise repair issues if it spots unknown entities hiding inside your clever automations.

Still testing… but it’s looking scary good 😊

Coming soon: spook.boo 👻

Screenshot of a Home Assistant automation editor and a Spook repair warning. The automation uses templated entity references, and Spook flags them as unknown entities with a playful message: “Spook has found a ghost in your automations 👻"

Added an auto-entities card to my main #HomeAssistant dashboard that will show me when any of my Uptime Kuma monitors aren't up. I usually have this dashboard open so it will help me see if something broke when not looking at my phone or when I don't have the Uptime Kuma tab open

According to Home Assistant I am still on the site of the facial depilation.

And I bet dollars to donuts it's Android fault.

@bjoern @chfkch @delta well it shows that the #deltachat core library can run inside of a home assistant add-on. the same core library is also used for writing bots.

So should be possible, but I don't know #HomeAssistant development enough to say for sure. Like can I expose actions from an add-on, that you can trigger from the home assistant UI, or would I need to extend home assistant itself for that?

@Professor_Stevens From time to time my #HomeAssistant asks me whether I would like it to manage some new device that it has discovered that I've never heard of.

From time to time my router tells me that some device I've never heard of has connected to my wi-fi.

Sometimes I'm guessing that these are widgets owned by visiting children, sometimes I haven't a clue. I'm tempted to say "yes" to Home Assistant, and tell it to switch the device off, or change its colour, or make it make a noise, or whatever features it exposes, and wait to see who complains.

Several years after installing #valetudo on our Roborock S7 and linking it to #homeassistant I have finally bothered to set up an automation.

At 10:00 it vacuums the kitchen to clean up the weetbix mess the kids leave behind after making their brekky.

This is the kind of home automation I like. Low-key, humdrum stuff that makes life slightly easier.

Okay, it seems like FullPageOS kind of nearly fixed my issues with setting up a Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 in kiosk mode. It's very opinionated, and need a few tweaks, but it's "less bad" than setting up from scratch. Still need to play around with it more to have a final opinion.

Now, here's the biggest advantage of that option: it's built buy @guysoft, the same person who builds OctoPi. So, even though right now it seems to be in a bad/broken development cycle, it's still an interesting project to keep an eye on.
