COFFEE TIME AT CLEMENTINA

Café Clementina, promising fresh flavours and a cozy gathering spot, opened on August 30, co-owners Shauni Haggerty and Allyson Padgett previously held management roles at their previous cafe. They eventually wanted a space where they could express their creativity and apply their industry expertise. With limited career growth and their former cafe up for sale, they considered buying it. When they couldn’t purchase the cafe, they decided to start one of their own.

They said Café Clementina will stand out by offering a comfortable space to work, study and socialize—along with robust tea options and a full matcha menu.

“We’re excited to host events, get to know the community even more, and create a space where everything feels safe and welcome,” Haggerty said.

Construction began nearly a year ago—around the same time they began exploring financing and rental options. They’ve faced several challenges along the way.

“We have a combined total of about 17 years in the service industry, but everything has come with a learning curve,” Padgett said.

“There are many parts that felt intuitive, but many that didn’t, despite our experience,” she said.

Their biggest challenge has been securing financing, particularly as first-time business owners in the restaurant industry.

“Thankfully, we’ve had so many amazing people supporting us in different ways, and that’s how we’ve made it this far,” Haggerty said.

“But I won’t lie, securing financing, especially for a restaurant, has been a huge hurdle.”

Haggerty said they’re currently roasting coffee at the KW Coffee Collective. Their current goal is to buy a roaster and roast some in-house coffee; they also plan to import Honduran coffee directly from a farmer who supplies them.

“Allyson is from Honduras and still has family back home, so we would love to make connections with growers and buy from them directly,” Haggerty said.

“The great thing about KW is that most people are always willing to try new things, and there isn’t a lot of Honduran representation in the community,” Padgett said. “We’re excited to be able to offer something potentially new and exciting to customers, alongside favourites everyone knows and loves,” she said.

They encourage future patrons to stay in touch through their Instagram @cafeclementina_.

… AP: “#ICE officers have in recent days deported the Cuban-born mother of a 1-year-old girl — separating them indefinitely — and three children ages 2, 4 and 7 who are US citizens along with their #Honduran born mothers. #Lawyers in the cases described how the women were arrested at routine check-ins at ICE offices, given virtually no opportunity to speak with lawyers or their family members and then #deported within 3 days or less.” The 4 year old has a rare form of #cancer. #democracy

#RSN: The Deadly Fight for #EnvironmentalJustice in #Honduras

The assassination of #Honduran #WaterDefender #JuanLópez offers a chilling reminder of the threats local leaders face in the most dangerous region in the world for #EnvironmentalActivists.

by Giada Ferrucci / NACLA
22 October 24

"On September 14, 2023, Juan Antonio López, a prominent environmental defender, anti-corruption activist, and community and faith leader in Tocoa, Honduras, was murdered. He was in his car after attending a religious event at a local Catholic church when an unidentified hitman shot him multiple times. Due to previous death threats and harassment linked to his defense of the Guapinol River, López had received precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the same measures that failed to protect fellow environmental defender Berta Cáceres from being killed in 2016.

"López’s assassination has sent shockwaves through the region, a chilling reminder of the violence and impunity that threaten environmental activists across Latin America and globally. His murder also reflects a disturbing pattern of attacks on those who dare to challenge economic and political powers in Honduras, a country that consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous in the world for environmental activists. These risks are especially pronounced in highly militarized areas like the Aguán Valley, where López lived, a resource-rich epicenter of land grabs and conflicts along the north coast. Dozens of Aguán environmental defenders have been systematically targeted, threatened, and murdered for more than a decade.

In 2023, 18 environmental defenders were killed in Honduras, the highest number per capita of any country in the world, according to Global Witness. Among the victims were three fellow Guapinol defenders: Aly Magdaleno Domínguez Ramos, Jairo Bonilla Ayala, and Oquelí Domínguez Ramos. In López’s case, authorities have arrested the alleged hitman and an accomplice.

"The Honduran state’s failure to protect López despite IACHR protective measures speaks to the broader issue of impunity and lack of political will to safeguard those who defend natural resources and human rights in the face of powerful economic interests. His murder also highlights systemic corruption, recently laid bare by scandals involving drug traffickers and high-profile political figures. In short, López’s assassination is part of a wider global crisis of relentless violence and persecution targeting activists who stand up to mining, logging, and other extractive industries."

Today former #Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez #JOH was sentenced to 45 years in prison by a U.S. court in New York. For eight years JOH ruled #Honduras with complete military and diplomatic support from the United States, even backed during a controversial second term win wherein he and his party were accused of committing electoral fraud. For 12 years since the 2009, coup d'etat, also backed by the U.S. the Honduran Nationalist party controlled the country, its major institutions and social programs, many of which were embezzled, shut down and/or privatized. Thousands of Honduran protestors were killed, disappeared or forced to flee during that time as JOH and his party cracked down on dissenters and opposition party members. Today Hondurans are relieved for this sentencing but U.S. imperialism remains intact and thriving in our country, unaccountable for their support of corruption and the killing of innocent people.

This week's #CONCACAF Club rankings.
I always take rankings with a grain of salt.
BUT
#ForgeFC is #54 across the region. Four places behind #TFC. Still a few points to get this year. #Cavalry is #56 ahead of #Motagua a strong #Honduran side.

There 29 MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams.

The Canadian Premier League has shown the rest of the region we can play ⚽️.
