Winter Assembly

I snapped this image this morning of one of my bird feeders. Cold weather drives birds to seek extra energy, and they flock to the feeders when it’s low. Clearly, I need to refill this one. But it’s chilly out there—and since I took the photo through the glass of my storm door while wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, I’m not stepping outside just yet.

"A rustic wooden bird feeder stands at the center of the scene, its slanted roof fringed with icicles that glisten like frozen lace. The feeder’s weathered wood and foggy, dirt-streaked windows evoke the quiet resilience of winter. Perched boldly in front are two northern cardinals—one male, a blaze of crimson against the muted tones, and one female, softer in tawny brown with hints of red. Their stout bodies and upright crests give them a regal, watchful presence.

Above and around the feeder, two chipping sparrows dart midair, wings outstretched in a blur of motion. Their small, streaked bodies and rusty caps add a flicker of energy to the stillness. On the far left corner of the feeder’s backside, a house finch clings to the edge, its plumage a gentle mix of rose and brown, head tilted as if surveying the scene.

Through the cloudy windows of the feeder, the faint silhouettes of two more birds emerge—ghostlike shadows, barely discernible, suggesting quiet movement within. The entire tableau is framed by the hush of cold air and the soft light of a winter morning, capturing a moment of communal gathering and survival." - Microsoft Copilot

Birds in snow

A lot of activity at the bird feeder this morning.

There is not much seed remaining and its toward the back of the feeder below the snow that we got.

House Finch, Washington

I had less time and worse weather than I planned over the holidays but I got one solid morning of shooting in. Got some eagles, ducks, and landscapes, but this finch was the best shot of the day.

I think I saw one about a week earlier fly over the house with a bunch of brown birds, the red caught my eye but it was so quick. The one photographed landed in the tree right next to me and hopped around. Love how this one turned out.

Crimson Crooner

One morning, years ago, I looked up into a tall tree at the forest’s edge and saw dozens of birds with red breasts. Most flew off, but one or two lingered. I wondered if they might be house finches, but they were too large. Turned out they were American robins. I’ll admit to a touch of disappointment—I’ve never seen a full flock of house finches. Still, here’s a male House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) I spotted around the same time.

"A small bird perches confidently on a bare branch, its body angled slightly forward as if leaning into the morning. Its head and chest blaze with a vibrant red—like a splash of berry juice on fresh snow—while the rest of its plumage is streaked in earthy browns and soft whites, echoing the textures of bark and dried grass. The feathers are finely detailed, each line etched like a brushstroke. Surrounding the bird are slender, leafless twigs, reaching out like skeletal fingers against a softly blurred backdrop. The background melts into muted tones—grays, taupes, and hints of distant foliage—casting the bird into sharp relief. Light falls gently across its face and breast, illuminating the red with a quiet glow. The bird’s gaze is steady, its posture proud, as if it knows it’s the jewel of this winter thicket." - Microsoft Copilot

Sunflower Adventure

While reviewing some underexposed house finch photos I took one spring, I came across a bird with unusually colored head feathers. It might be a young male who hasn’t yet developed the characteristic reddish plumage around the head and chest—or perhaps it’s one of the rarer yellow variants. I managed to capture a few shots of this curious finch, and this one stands out as the most intriguing.

"Perched delicately on a slender, leafless branch, a young house finch holds a sunflower seed in its slightly open beak—a moment of stillness captured in exquisite detail. The bird’s plumage is a soft mosaic of warm browns, creamy whites, and muted yellows, with fine streaks tracing its chest and wings like brushstrokes on parchment. Its feathers appear downy and fresh, hinting at youth and recent molt.

The finch’s eye is dark and round, alert yet gentle, as if contemplating the seed’s promise. Its tiny claws grip the branch with quiet determination, balancing between hunger and poise. The background blurs into a wash of green, suggesting a lush, natural setting just beyond focus—perhaps a garden or wooded edge—allowing the bird to stand in sharp relief, like a glyph etched against a living canvas.

The composition is intimate and reverent, drawing the viewer into the quiet ritual of feeding. The photograph bears the signature “Swede's Photographs” at the bottom, a subtle mark of witness to this sovereign moment." - Microsoft Copilot

Disorderly House Finch

This lively house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) was caught red-handed scattering seeds at the bird feeder, turning snack time into a delightful mess.

"Perched precariously on the edge of a rustic bird feeder, a male House Finch—his head and chest ablaze in rosy red—appears to be the epicenter of a small seed storm. His streaked brown and white body leans forward with a kind of reckless enthusiasm, as if he’s just lunged or landed with too much gusto.

Around him, sunflower seeds and tiny grains tumble through the air in a chaotic cascade, caught mid-fall like confetti at a woodland celebration. Some spill from the feeder’s lip, others seem flung by the bird’s own disorderly arrival. The feeder itself is simple and weathered, its edges softened by time and use.

The finch’s posture is animated—tail slightly raised, wings tucked but tense, beak open just enough to suggest he’s either chirping or chewing. His red plumage glows against the softly blurred background, which hints at autumn with warm, muted tones—burnt orange, faded gold, and dusky brown.

This is not a portrait of calm foraging. It’s a snapshot of feathered frenzy, a moment of messy abundance and spirited interruption. The photograph is signed “© Swede's Photographs” in the bottom left corner, marking this as a captured act of avian mischief." - Microsoft Copilot

Perch Pact

A few days ago, I shared a blurry, out-of-focus image of a small brown bird mid-flight. I wasn’t certain of the species, but suspected it was either a House Finch or a House Sparrow. That uncertainty sparked a bit of discussion—some votes for finch, others for sparrow.

Now, here’s a clearer image featuring both: a female House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) and a male House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). Side by side, they offer a quiet comparison—streaked versus patched, slender versus stout. The mystery bird may remain unresolved, but this pairing brings both contenders into view.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

"Two birds perch side by side on a gently curved metal rod, suspended against a soft blur of background light. The rod arcs like a quiet bridge, offering a momentary stage for this feathered duet.

On the left, a female House Finch stands slender and alert. Her plumage is a tapestry of warm browns and delicate streaks, like brushstrokes across parchment. Her posture is poised yet gentle, as if she’s listening to the air. Her beak is small and conical, suited for seeds and quiet foraging. She gazes slightly forward; her body angled with subtle grace.

To her right, a male House Sparrow anchors the scene with a more compact, stout presence. His feathers are a patchwork of earthy browns and soft grays, with a hint of black near the throat—a ceremonial bib of sorts. His head is rounder, his chest broader, and his stance more grounded. He faces slightly away, as if surveying the invisible perimeter of their shared perch.

The background is a soft wash of muted tones—perhaps trees or sky—blurred into abstraction. This visual quietude draws the eye to the birds themselves, highlighting the intricate texture of their feathers and the quiet geometry of their poses." - Microsoft Copilot

Theatrical Finch

This male House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) struck me as unusually dramatic one morning—not just interesting, but theatrical in his posture and plumage. It was some time ago, but the impression lingers.

"A male House Finch perches on a slender branch, his plumage lit like a flame against the soft green blur of the background. The red on his head and chest is not subtle—it’s theatrical, almost defiant, as if he’s auditioning for spring in a single pose. The red bleeds into streaks of brown and white along his wings and flanks, each feather edged with texture that suggests both age and vitality.

His beak is short and conical, built for cracking seeds but closed now in quiet focus. He faces slightly to the side, not quite in profile—just enough to show the curve of his crown and the full blaze of his chest. There’s a tension in his posture, a readiness, as if he’s weighing whether to sing or fly.

The background is a soft wash of green, blurred into abstraction. It frames the bird without competing, like a stage curtain drawn back just enough to let the actor shine. The light is even, gentle, and forgiving—no harsh shadows, just a natural spotlight that makes the red glow like embers.

This is not a casual perch. It’s a declaration." - Copilot

Is This Seat Taken

I watched this Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) as it approached the little rustic bird feeder shaped like a porch swing. The image catches it mid-arrival, clearly aware of the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) already perched at the edge.

The chickadee slipped into a narrow spot between the finch and the arm of the swing—just long enough to grab a nut and vanish.

Among feeding birds, finches are what I call grazers. Chickadees? Definitely takeout.

"A Carolina chickadee hovers just inches from a hanging bird feeder, wings blurred in motion, body angled forward in descent. Its feet are curled midair, ready to grasp the edge, but its attention is split—not just on the feeder, but on the house finch already there.

The chickadee’s head is slightly turned, eyes tracking the finch with quiet calculation. It’s not confrontation, not fear—just a measured awareness. The feeder is the goal, but the finch is part of the equation.

The house finch, perched and feeding, is turned slightly toward the chickadee. Its reddish head and chest catch the soft light, and its posture suggests it’s noticed the newcomer. The moment isn’t tense, but it’s not indifferent either. There’s a subtle shift in weight, a pause in pecking—like two neighbors acknowledging each other at the fence.

The feeder hangs alone, suspended in open air. No branches, no background noise. Just two birds, one in motion, one adjusting, both aware. The light is diffuse, likely morning, casting no harsh shadows. The scene holds a quiet choreography—arrival, recognition, and the shared etiquette of winter feeding." - Copilot with edits
